JULY 31, I960 IPdDIHlT Giants Edge Cincy 2-1 in Long Game San Francisco - IUPD - Jim Davenport singled home An ! dre Rodgers from third in the 10th inning Saturday to give the San Francisco Giants a 2-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds and their fourth straight win. The deciding run got on base when Rodgers worked losing pitcher Jim Brosnan for a pass with one out and then went to third base on an Infield single by Don Blasin game after relief pitcher Slu Miller had struck out. On the play second baseman Roy McMillan threw the ball wildly to first for an error allowing Blasingame to go to the middle bag. Then Davenport, who had come into the game late, hit a looper into centerfield that dropped between Vada Pinson and McMillan for the winning blow. Miller pitched the last two innings after southpaw Billy O'Dell retired with an injured hand and picked up his third victory against as many de feats. O'Dell, who struck out eight and was touched for an unearned run during the eight innings he worked, went out In the ninth after Gordon Woman Cancels Lake Erie Swim Erie, Pa.-ffiPD - Four-foot high rollers and heavy winds Saturday night forced an at tractive Erie swimming in structor to postpone for at least a week her attempt to become the first person ever to swim across Lake Erie. Miss Mary Hafey, a swim ming teacher at the Erie YWCA, returned here from Long Point, Ontario, after she was advised by the weather bureau that conditions would not improve. Miss Hafey, a pert five feet two and 120 pounds, journey ed to Long Point Friday night and was to have begun her third try at conquering . the lake Saturday. But bad weath er beset her then, too. Miss Hafey failed in her two preivous efforts, in 1958 and 1959, when she was forced to call its quits after some 12 miles in choppy waters. Those unsuccessful attempts began on the American side. Hobbie. mainstay of the Cub's pitching staff, bounced a double off the right field wall and scored the first run in a four-run seventh inning which included a three - run home by George Altman. The rally came off reliever Elroy Face but the loss went to starter Bob Friend who left for a pinch hitter after allowing the Cubs to take a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. Wife Has Baby Hobbie, who received news that his wife had given birth to a 6-pound, 9-ounce boy, walked only one batter and struck out six in bringing his record to 10-13. The Pirates nicked Hobbie for their only run on three singles in the first inning, but failed to get more than one safe blow in any one frame thereafter. The victory by the White Sox moved them one percent age point ahead of the idle Yankees, whose scheduled game with the Athletics was postponed by rain. Ralston Upset By Lenoir in Tennis Tourney Kalamazoo, Mich. - "JPD -Top -seeded Dennis Ralston, plagued by injuries and home sickness, was ousted by third seeded Bill Lenoir of Tucson, Ariz., Saturday in the junior division semifinals of the National Junior and Boys Tennis tournament. Lenoir trounced Ralston in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, and will meet second - seeded Frank Froehling of Coral Gables, Fla., today for the National Junior championship. Froeh ling advanced to the finals by stopping fourth seeded Bill Bond of La Jolla, Calif., in the other junior semifinal match, 6-4, 4-6, 8-1. Newcombe, 34, who was the National league's most valuable player and the major leagues' pitcher of the year when he won 27 games for the Dodgers in 1056, was bought from the Cincinnati Reds Fri day night for an undisclosed sum.
