tractive Erie swimming in
structor to postpone for at
least a week her attempt to
become the first person ever
to swim across Lake Erie.
Miss Mary Hafey, a swim
ming teacher at the Erie
YWCA, returned here from
Long Point, Ontario, after she
was advised by the weather
bureau that conditions would
not improve.
Miss Hafey, a pert five feet
two and 120 pounds, journey
ed to Long Point Friday night
and was to have begun her
third try at conquering . the
lake Saturday. But bad weath
er beset her then, too.
Miss Hafey failed in her
two preivous efforts, in 1958
and 1959, when she was forced
to call its quits after some 12
miles in choppy waters. Those
unsuccessful attempts began
on the American side. This
time she will start in Canada.
She predicted the 28-mile
swim, to be undertaken dur
ing fair weather, would take
her about 24 hours.

has a bona fide booster in
Casey Stengel, who dropped
a hint Saturday that he would
not mind having him on the
Yankees.
Mongol said there are a
lotta players in the American
league who aren't half as good
as Piersall.
"Some people say this man
is crazy," Casey continued.
"Well he certainly doesn't
play crazy. When he hits the
ball, he never runs to third
base. He doesn't run through
the pitcher's box either."

Cubs to a 6-1 victory Saturday
and end an eight-game losing
streak.
Hobbie. mainstay of the
Cub's pitching staff, bounced
a double off the right field
wall and scored the first run
in a four-run seventh inning
which included a three - run
home by George Altman.
The rally came off reliever
Elroy Face but the loss went
to starter Bob Friend who
left for a pinch hitter after
allowing the Cubs to take a
2-1 lead in the sixth inning.
Wife Has Baby
Hobbie, who received news
that his wife had given birth
to a 6-pound, 9-ounce boy,
walked only one batter and
struck out six in bringing his
record to 10-13.
The Pirates nicked Hobbie
for their only run on three
singles in the first inning, but
failed to get more than one
safe blow in any one frame
thereafter.
Daryl Spencer's double
with the bases full in the fifth
inning highlighted a four-run
rally that carried the St.
