THUnBDAY, JULY 26, 1960 MEDFOHD MAIL THIBUNE, MEDfOBD, ORE. flYVorlds Around By lynn M. Walklnt Cmobantgr Iniscla Carry Th.lr Hom Wllh Them They could appropriately linvo boon culled "cupmilu cnrrlor" or "cocoon IrunsporU cr" or nny of muny other descriptive mimes, but instead they wore nnnicr "easebniir-crs"-and for tht vory best of roii norm. Tho orlvlmil and highly Im aginative observer who first discovered lind mimed them wont further out on tho gram miillcul limb by giving tho various pcoli' spoclut names cuch as "pistol ensebcaror" mid "cigar casobuurar." , There nro probiibly n hun dred species of these Insect found In North Amorlcn, Even tho clothes-moth oolongs to tho group, us does tho diamond-back moth, coddling mot h, frulHiroe-leuf-rollcr, mid the Kuropenn corn borer, along with bagworm and sug arcane borer. They nro nil downright pe cullnr In their wny, but the cnsxlwnrer Is about as strange as they come. Like molluski such as the clam, oyster and whelk Unit live In the sea and build about themselves n limestone shell to protect their oft bodies, the enscbearer insect constructs a case or a liken enpnile In which It lives and, like the mollusk, carries lu home along with It. But with the insect the ense Is not a shell, but a port able homo mndo of silk, The brownish moth with tho slender wings lays her eggs In or on the stems of various plants, Tho larvae Unit hutch from theso eggs work and tunnel within the tissues of the plant until Uicy are midy to come out Into the world. Then Uiey construct tho silken bag, or case, Inside of which they live. Bits of leaf or parts of flower petals re often worked Into the case, so that It blends In bet ter with tholr surroundings. Carrying their portable homo along, the larvae moves about over the leaves of the host plant, or In the case of some species, over Uie prefer red fruit on which Uicy feed. Snug and cozy, but certainly not warm, the larvao spend the wintor In their case. When spring comes the larvae have completed their transforma tion from larvne to brownish moth. They crawl forth, leaving tho empty case attached to the plant stem. They hove no further uso for tho case now, for thoy have become crea tures with wings, capnble of flight, with one thing In mind -to find a sulUible place to deposit their eggs so that the nice of cnscbcnrcrs can con tinue. Substantial Cast One variety of casebearer, known as tho "pistol case benrer," constructs Its case of more substantial materials. The case is hnrd and shell like, but has a shnrp right anglo crook on one end that barely resembles the hand grip of a pistol. The "cigar casebearer" constructs Its "carrying-case" as a long, lender capsule somewhat In the shape of a blunt cigar, .Tho bearer of tho case, In instances associated with these sometimes destructive Insects, in not too familiar to most pcopto but In a bouquet of cut flowers on the front-room table you may sometimes dis cover the peculiar little port ablo h omes attached to a flower stem. It Is has a de cided, right-angle crook at the top end, you may have, inside a specimen of the "pis tol casc-benror;" one of the many oddities of Uie world of Uio Insects.
