New Research Started Into Unseen Plants Along Coast THURSDAY, JULY 28, 1010 Corvallis - Plants and ani mals that grow on Oregon soil have been the basis for a century of research, but. the vastly greater numbers of un seen plants and animals that float In the ocean waters off Oregon are the concern of new studies by the Oregon State college oceanography department. 1 The new research is headed by Dr. Herbert F. Frolander, one of the nation's top experts on plankton - the microscopic-size plants and animals that drift with the currents and that are the "basic foodstuffs" for all ocean life The long-range studies will give new understanding about the Oregon ocean; are care fully tied in with other OSC research on currents, water temperature, salinity, tides Board of Health To Discuss Hiring Officer in County The Jackson county board of health may hold an in formal meeting Monday to discuss the possibility of ob taining a public health officer. Dr. C. I. Drummond. pres ent Jackson county ntalth officer, is now tin leave of absence until Oct. 1 because of ill health, Coutrty Com missioner Ralph James said. Health board members who hire the public health officer hope Dr. Drummond will be able to return to his duties then. . . . However, ' Jackson county has been without a public health officer since June 1 when Dr. Drummond became 111. Dr. Martin L. Voorheli was eonsiderinf the temporary ap pointment at public health of ficer but had to decline be cause of business reasons. Oth er local doctors art being con tacted (or the temporary job. Salarr Authorise The county court has au thorized a salary of $12,600. This is $2,400 under the $15, 000 Dr. Drummond has been receiving. Dr. A. Erin Merkel, former Jackson county public health officer, received $12,600 a year. Dr. Merkel left a year ago for a position in the' San Diego, Calif., public health department. County Judge Earl Miller said "there's a possibility Dr. Merkel may return to Jack son county if his former job is open." Members of the local health board are Judge Miller, Coun ty School Supt. Alf B. Mek vold, Medford City Council man Ed Hall, Dr. Lawrence Ellis, dentist, Dr. B. B. Bar tels, H. P. Jewett, Central Point, and Eugene Thorndyke. 4 H Club News EP Horse Club The Eagle Point Desert Pes?asus 4-H club held their July meeting at the Dunn ranch July 23. Entry blanks for the Jack con county fair were made out and Mr. Dunn gave us in structions . in the pre - fair events. Our pre-fair will be held at 1 p.m. at the Dunn ranch July 31. Vick Stewart will be our judge. We extend an in vitation to all other 4-H horse clubs. , We are sorry to report one of our club members, Laura Mae Nobel, is in Sacred Heart hospital. Her horse -slipped and fell with her while she was helping her grandfather, Vernie Mathew, with his cat tle. Leslie Kranbeal, Reporter. 1 . , Meadows Busy Beavers The July meeting of the Meadows Busy Beavers 4-H club was called to order by Ruth Ellis, president, July 16 at the home of Mr. and Mrs Orvllle Mose. Eight members end five visitors were present. Visitors were Mrs. Davis. Mr. and Mrs. Orville Mose, and out of state visitors Kar on and Lee Caery from San Jose, Calif. Bill Ellis gave a treasurer's report. We found out what kind of plant to buy for our community project. We decid ed to all put up our 4-H signs. Six of our members plan to go to 4-H summer camp at Lake of the Woods. Bill Ellis and Stanton Hall will give demonstrations next meeting. , - , Tli meeting was adjourn ed. And once you get out in the deep water where bottom algae disap pears because light can't reach the ocean floor, the floating plant plankton is the essential "first link" in the complex life-chain in the sea. It is the only manufacturer of food in vast areas of the ocean - the "pasture or. we sea so to speak. Plankton includes a tremen dous range in the animal king dom in addition to plant ma terials, Frolander emphasized. Many tiny sea animals come In the plankton classification during the early stages of life when they are too young to do mora than float in the wa ter. Th "graduate" from the plankton class, to become per haps a tuna fish or a Dunge neas crab, when they are big enough to propel themselves or to sink to the bottom. Member of Class One important member of the Crustacea class (which in cludes shrimps, crabs and lob sters) that remains forever as a plankton is the Copcpoda. It plays a role similar to that of cattle on land although these "grazers" are only a fraction of an inch long as adults. As an example of the sea food-chain, Frolander pointed out that salmon live on her ring, but herring live on plankton, such as the Copcpo da, combed out of the water by the gills. Whales eat vast amounts of animal plimktun In much the same maimer. Plankton, both plant nnd ani mal, Is the basic food also for oyster, clams, scallops, and nil other son life, Frolundcr noted. Almost nothing Is known about what forms make up the major species of plankton off Oregon, their quantity, or season variations. The OSC research, which is sponsored by grants from the Office of Naval Research and National Science Foundation, will an swer these questions and more. Frolundcr and oilier 09C ocean scientists have been making plankton collections for the past six months in Yaqulna Hay. They already have discovered great differ ences in plunktnn species and numbers at different spots in the buy.
