Liberty vlllc, III., geologist who dli-d of an apparent heart attack, was brought here Tuesday. Horner died while on an ex pedition at West Eagle Luke 30 miles northeast of here Monday. Ills body had to be packed out of rugged eaHtern Oregon country, Horner wn a pnrtner on an expedition with C. P. Miller of Arizona. With her was four-ycur-old William, the survivor of a set of twin boys, her only children. Absalom, her husband, and little William's father, had been a soldier in the British army stationed on the island of Santa Lucia In the British West Indies. . llore William was born and here Absalom met death In battle. The young mother and her small son crossed the Isthmus of Panama on mule back, and many weeks later arrived In the raw, new gold mlnlng town of Yreka to live with an uncle. And about this time a fam ily named Beck set out from Peoria, III., to cross the plains in a covered wagon. Arriving in California, they settled In Fall River Mills where Jen nie, their daughter, grew up. So tho little English boy and the little pioneer Ameri can girl met, and later were married and had nine chil dren, and founded the town of Brag In eastern Siskiyou county. Sunday, 100 descendants of this pioneer couple gathered In the city park in Yreka for a family reunion. Five of the nine children survive and three were present on Sun day. They arc Mrs. Grace Bray Deter, Yreka; Mrs. Ma bel Bray Sanders, Hornbrook, and Mrs. Ruth Bray Bnum gartner, Yreka. Unble to attend were Mrs. Peurl Bray Yoving of Stock ton. Calif., and William A. Bray of Anderson, Calif. Surviving grand children number 22, of whom 16 were present. Thirty-four of 54 great-grandchildren, and 20 of 32 great-great-grandchildren also attended. JOHNSTON STORES Where You Always Get Good Service 112 SOUTH RIVERSIDE Gazelle Child Dies While Baby Sitter Swims in Creek By BESSIE BOYD FRASER Mail Tribun Correspondent Yreka - Three small chil dren were taken to the home of a baby sitter In Gazelle last week, In order that their mother, Mrs. Arlcne West brook, might work as a wait ress in her father's restaurant. The baby sitter was a young girl making her home with a Mrs. Wright, who took the children and sitter to a near by creek to spend the day and then returned to her home. They played in the creek and had a picnic lunch, after wlilcn the youngsters were put on a blanket In tiie shade of a big tree to take their naps. When all were asleep the girl went swimming with a friend and lorgot all about time and the children In her care. Hours later Mrs. Wright came to take them home and found them asleep in the sun. The temperature was 108 in the shade that day. They were scarcely breath ing from heat prostration. She applied cold towels and tried to revive them, but when they didn't respond to treatment started for help. While stopping at a service station in Gazelle, Jack Camp bell realized the babies were in serious condition and tried mouth to mouth respiration, but Gregory Alan Wcstbrook, 17 months, died shortly after reaching the Mt. Shasta hos pital. The other two children are expected to recover. The father is John Curtis Westbrook and the mother is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Twltchell of Gazelle. Tunnel Construction Is Now On Schedule Illinois Valley - According to L. E. Hcrndon, project su perintendent for Gibbons and Reed construction company work on the north approach to the Oregon Mountain tun net is progressing according to schedule. They expect to move their rock plant in some time this week and within the next two weeks heavy earth moving equipment on the job. Work so far has Included clearing the right-of-way of limber so that 530,000 yards of earth moving work for the approach . can be iccom pllshed. More than 100 persons have applied for work on the Job. Herndon said, estimating that 40 person will be used during conditions permit, every con sideration will be given peo ple for employment, he said Ho expressed his gratitude for the many valley persons who have offered housing and other help lor his personnel Hcrndon asked .that people wishing employment go to the trailer office parked at Twin Pines motel so as not to en danger themselves as did one parly who ventured Into the area recently.
