CAB examiner William J. Maddenm ade the recommen dation Monday that Pan American World airways be allowed to originate and ter minate trans-Pacific flights in Portland, that Pan American and Northwest Orient airlines be authorized competitive rights on each other's routes between the U.S. and the Ori ent and that Flying Tiger line be granted a five-year U.S. Orient cargo and mail opera tion. Placing of orzand and In some instances oiling on ac cess roads is much less costly than frequent watering of a road and frequent blading. BLM is using orzand and various types of oils as a dust palliative keeping costs of each in order to ascertain which is the less costly. This process of oiling and using orzand is declared "preventative maintenance." Tokyo's Weary Cops Finally Find Friends Tokyo (UPD - Tokyo's riot- weary police have finally found a friend. Building Permits Issued by Medfprd ' Seven building permits, in cluding three to the Medford school district, have been is sued recently by ' Mcdford's city building department. The largest permit issued to the district is a permit for $121,434 to add class rooms to Hedrick Junior High school. The other permits were for $58,000 to remodel and add to a shop building at Mc Louglin school cafeteria. Tower Broiler acquired a permit for $5,000 to add a banquet room at 1206 North Riverside ave. Gordon Hud son took out a $4,000 permit to build a swimming pool at 349 Windsor ave. Warsaw - (UPD - Polish army helicopters airlifted flood survivors from treetops in the southern town of Sucha Tues day and other river city resi dents were warned to be ready to move out on short notice. Polish troops were as signed to flood relief work throughout the nation, with all major rivers reporting ris ing waters. Engineers Ask Deeper Channel Portland (UPt The U.S. Army Engineers office in Portland has recommended deepening and widening the channel of the Columbia river between the Interstate bridges at Vancouver and the mouth of the Willamette river. The recommendtion was made in a report for review by the Board of Engineers for Rivers and Harbors in Washington, D.C; ... The report proposed deep ening the channel from 30 to 35 feet and widening it from 300 to 500 feet. This would provide the same depth and width as now exists over the remainder of the channel downstream to the mouth of the Columbia river. Mother, Daughter Drown in River Albany (UPD Mrs. Viola Swarm of Albany and her 9-year-old daughter Betty Jane drowned Tuesday in the Wil lamette river during a visit in Bryant park. Skindlvers located the bodies about one hour later. Authorities said the girl had been wading in shallow water when she suddenly stepped into deep water. Fully-cloth-ed, the mother leaped in to save her. An Albany man. Leo Mc- Cuiston, jumped in and at tempted to help the two but the mother and daughter were swept away. SP 3-6358 I Performances Are Well-Done in Play At Ashland Event Tuesday night's Oregon Shakespearean Festival pro duction of "Julius Cacsnr" was better than adequate for a first night performance. There is, however, room for improvement. The play can be lauded more for its individual per formances rather than for Its over-all continuity. In the opinion of a novice critic, the play started off slow, with a few exceptions, and continued so until the as sassination of Julius Caesur by his disgruntled Senate. From the assassination on, the actors seemed to have gained the necessary feeling of their parts, and this im proved feeling was communi cated to the near capacity audience. Wall-Done Performances In the first part of the piny there were several individual well-done performan ces. Among these can be counted Cassias' (Gerald Larson) lines in which he succcssfuly ral lied Brutus (Charles Taylor) to the cause of justice (i.e., kill the omnipotent Caesar). Casca (Christopher Newton) was good throughout. Newton is a natural for this role, and it left the audience wishing that he had more lines than he did. Portia (Shirley Patton) per haps did the best of all in the small-part roles. The dismay and anguish that she felt when she could not get her husband, Brutus, to tell her what was bothering him, was also felt by the audience. Portrays Caesar Well Richard D. Risso, In the role of Julius Caesar, did well in portraying the well-meaning but conceited and overbearing ruler who was destined to die. Caesar's wife Calpurnla (Shirley Cox) left much to be desired. Although she knew her lines when she was trying j to convince Caesar that he should not go to the Senate on the fateful day of his death she was not as convincing as she could have been. Neither did Brutus portray his love for Caesar or his ear ly reluctance to harm him as well as he probably should have. However Brutus more than made up for this over sight during his heated argu ment with friend Cassius on the field of battle toward the end of the day. Keith Fowler In the role of Mark Antony was excellent. Not only was the famous fu neral oration, thnt incited tho citizens of Rome to violence following the death of Caesar, well dune, but his speech over the body of Caesar, during which he made vows of re venge, was as good, if not bol ter. Fowler was ably assisted in the funeral oration by an ex tremely good "crowd." One could readily feel the crowd's anger turning from Antony to Brutus the more Antony spoke. Casting was good through out. Besides Newton in the role of Casca, Larson in the role of the cunning Cassius was perhaps the next best bit of casting. Ho was sly, treach erous, and evil but with good intentions, as he should havo been. The play Is well worth watching. R.G.N. BLACK CATS? The Judgo ruled from the bench immediately aftor de fense and state attorneys had presented their arguments on the motion. His comment was provoked by affidavits offered by de fense attorneys David Card and Freeman Murray from five women jurors who main tained they had votod for a manslaughter vordlcl but be lieved then and now that Jo seph was Innocent. The judge noted that each uror was polled regarding the verdict at the time It was returned last May 14 and each juror had confirmed tho verdict. 'If there was a chanxe in their minds, it was since that time," the Judxe said In his ruling. He added, "Now If he or she voted for guilty when he or she knew he, Jo seph, was innocent, let that be on his or her conscience the rest of his or her days not on mine."
