Newspaper Page Text12 A Hollywood Couple Splits In Attempt to Prove Hearts Will 'Grow Fonder' MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MCDFORD. ORE. WEDNESDAY. JULY 27. 1160 By VERNON SCOTT , UPI Hollywood Correspondent Hollywood - (11PD - "Absence makes the heart grow fond er." " That's the theory subscribed to by actress Nina Shipman and novelist Peter Gilman, who became engaged and then parted for six month. After deciding to tie the knot, Gilman hied off . to Europe to write anotlier book. Nina is .busy working in movietown., Crazy? Not according to blonde, slender Nina. "The separation gives us an opportunity to get our bear ings and determine how much we mean to one another," she explained. "If our love is real then this separation won't hurt us. If it does affect us, then it's better to find out now than after we're married." A Unique Engagement A steady couple for almost two years, the Shipman -Gilman engagement is out of the ordinary. She doesn't ' wear a ring, and their ground rules include dates with other ; people. While Gilman " who recent ly sold screen rights to his novel "Diamond Head" to Co- lumbia Pictures for $100,000 - is in Europe penning "Big Sur," Nina is living in the home of millionaire Lance Reventlow. She was maid of honor at Lance's wedding to Jill St. John. She recently com plrted "High Time," a movie star ring Bing Crosby and Fabian. "While Pete Is gone I'm studying voice and taking dancing lessons," Nina said. "I'm also very Interested in concert piano." When the future Mrs. Gil man isn't taking lessons or filming movies, she makes a handsome living starring in television shows. Because she is an excellent horsewoman, Nina is sought for western heroine roles. Not Star Struck "I'm not star-struck, but I do find a feeling of achieve ment in acting and singing," she said. "Those things give me a sense of fulfillment. "After we're married. Peter and I plan to travel around the world for a long time be fore we settle down in any one place. Neither of us feels we belciig in a rose-covered cottage with a picket fence." Nina is no newcomer to show business. She is a third generation performer. "My grandmother starred in silent movies under the name of Nell Shipman. Both my mother and father were professional dancers. "But the nicest thing that ever happened to me," Nina concluded, "was the dedica tion of Diamond Head to me from Peter." Over 19 times as many peo ple died of cancer as of tuber culosis in 1957. Treasury to Pay Off Part of Debt Washington - IUPD - The treasury will pay off $600 mil lion of the national debt next month. Republicans were certain to cite this in the coming elec tion campaign as the fruit of the F.isenhower administra tion's "responsible" fiscal pol icies. The debt reduction comes on the heels - and is partly the result-of President Eisen hower's announcement that the government finished out the last fiscal year June 30 with a surplus of $1.1 billion, five times more than first forecast. '' Paying off $600 million of the national debt might seem a little like removing a cup of water from the ocean. The government still will owe more than $287 billion. The debt will be whittled down by paying off in cash $9.6 billion in securities ma turing Aug. 15 and then sell ing only $9 billion in new securities. The difference will come out of the treasury's large cash balance of about $7.7 billion. CIVIL RIGHTS PARADE Chicago-IUPD-The Rev. Mar tin Luther King, Montgomery, Ala., led a crowd of 5,000 per sons, mostly Negroes, who pa raded before the GOP conven tion hall Monday night in sup port of a strong civil rights platform. Dr. King said the marchers wanted to dramatize the Negro struggle for equality. Big Step Taken Toward Detecting Hidden Cancers . By DELOS SMITH UPI Science Editor New York - IUPU - A big step has been taken toward the happy medical and patient day when it will be possible to locale hidden cancers be fore they have grown enough to announce their presence with life - threatening symp toms. The quest of scientists Joseph J. Hlavka and Donald A. Buyske of the Lederle Laboratories, Pearl River, N, Y., began with a common ob servation of pathologists that the antibiotics which chemi cally are tetracyclines now and then localize in cancerous tissue. Antibiotics are administer ed not for cancer but to kill bacterial invaders which are making people sick, and so these observations were acci dental. But anything which seems to have a preference for cancer over normal tissue invokes passionate scientific interest, naturally. Perform Chemical Feat Lederle scientists, pursuing this lead, fused iodine into the tetracycline molecule -fused it in, mind, so that it was a basic part of the chemi cal structure, and not some thing which merelv had been added by joining. That was a neat chemical feat and the product was to give it its descriptive name 7-iodo-6-de-ovytetracycline. The next step was to make the Iodine in the tetracycline radioactive, which was a nice bit of chemistry, too, because it Involved substituting a radioactive Iodine isotope for the stable iodine. Having done all this, Hlavka and Buyske had a "marker" In their anti biotic. Experiment with Doos They Injected It Into the veins of dogs which had de veloped mammary lumort spontaneously and then ran Geigcr counters over their bodies to find out if the anti biotic had localized and If so, where. The highest counts for radioactivity was when the counters were over the liver area. The second highest came from the tumors, and the third from the kidneys. Since antibiotics are passed around in the blood and ex creted by way of liver and kidneys, the relative ' high count in the tumors was most hopeful. "Although the biological work with litis compound is in an early development stage, it appears that the differential localization in tumor tissue, may be sufficient to allow the use of this compound as a diagnostic acid In the location of cancerous growths," the scientists reported. fi MANN'S . . .
