That organization in Its an nual savings and loan fact book finds that 01 per cent of all nonfurm families some 28 million of them own their homes. That con trusts with S3 per cent a dec ade ago and 45 per cent in 1030. Home owners are financing these houses with $131 billion of mortgago debt which is 11 per cent higher than at the end of 1053. Savings Near 12 Billion Not only did the savings and loan associations lead oth er lenders in mortgages but also they attracted the bulk of national savings. ' Over-the-counter net sav ings for ail Institutions amounted to $11.6 billion for 1050. Of that amount savings and loan associations attracted $6.7 billion or 58 per cent of the total. While the associations' sav ings rose above rates of the past, the gains of commercial banks and mutual savings banks were reduced. . The fact book ranked 1959 savings gains in seven select ed media as follows: savings associations, $6.7 billion; com- blllion; billion; merelal bunks, $2.7 mutual funds, $2.7 mutual savings banks, $1 bil lion; and credit unions, $600 million. United SUites savings bonds fell by $1.9 billion for the fourth year in a row, and de posit in postal savings banks shrank $200 million for the 11th consecutive year. Last Year Was Big The principal reason for the trend of savings to the asso ciations was the higher rate of return provided, It was pointed out. The only yields on savings exceding the average of 3.7 per cent paid by loan associa tions was in U.S. bonds and AAA corporate bonds. High grade municipal bonds equal ed the association rate The associations reported a big year all around for 1959. Their assets reached a record high of $63,472,000,000, up $8.4 billion or 15 per cent compared with 1958. . AH savings of the nation reached $156,126,900,000 at the end of 1050, tho fact book noted.
