Certainly tho 10(10 plat form Uvea up Ut Konni'dy'a description of "something for avcryono." And It la rniaon bio In auppose that, In draft inn Sen. Lyndon 0. Johnaon a hla runnlnu mate, Kennedy waa not unaware of those 1 11) Southern electoral votea. Hut It aeema equally clear, from the tenor of hla accept ance apeech, that Kennedy la I to heedlnK hla own admoni tion of 1037, to plot hla cam paign "In terms of national laauea and trenda." The rcu on: to capture tho votea, ua liu put It July 1, of "the mil limn nf Americana who voted for President Klsenhower, but balk at hla would-be, aclf iippolnled auccoaaor." Targoh Nixon In tluia drawlnu u bead on hla probable opponent, Vice President Richard M. Nixon, tho Democratic nominee ro vuuled an Interesting ablft In campnlKii tiicllca. Six month! earlier tin hud had thla to any about him: "Mr, Nixon laid he wanta to carry on the Elsenhower policies. I auy the country can not afford it, Perhapa we could afford a Plorce follow Inn Fillmore. But after liu chiinan Uila nation needed a Lincoln - after Tuft wo need ed ii Wilson - after Hoover wo needed Franklin Hooso veil. And lifter eight yoara of Klaonhnwur, this nation needs a strong, creative Democrat in the White House." Whon It camo down to wrltlnit hla acceptance speech, Kennedy ro)Oiited most of this puruKruph verbatim, b u t changed the first acnlence to read: "Perhaps he (Nixon) could carry on the party pol iclea - the pollciea of Nixon, nenson, Dlrksen and Gold water." And, In the last sen tence, "Elttht years of Elsen hower" wua rephrased bb "eight yeara of drugged and fitful sleep." In redirecting hla fire, how over, Kennedy did more than Quotes From the News BY UNITED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Oregon Gov. Mark O. Hatfield, urging Republican! to pressure Gov, Nelson A. Rockefeller to accept the vice presi dential nomination dcsplto the New Yorker'! out-and-out refusal: - "I'm not giving up on lh lda. I would be very dcllghttd to im such a tick!. I will axpraia it to him (RockafalUr) t the first opportunity." Pennsylvania Sen. Hugh Scott, commenting 'on Demo cratic presidential nominee John F. Kennedy's age: "Democrats will economist on tranaportatlon during the campaign because Jack plans to traval at half far,". Republican National Chairman Thruslon Morton, answer ing a newsmen's query on whether Vice President Richard M. Although Kennedy hud said In January that "we uro not going to win by dodging the ronl issuo of this campaign -tho Klsenhower administra tion llaolf," it became appar ent on July IB that ho is anxious not to alienate those independent voters who rev- oro tho president if not hit administration. In all other respects, how ever, Kennedy's accepluncc speech was consistent with hla previous statement re garding tho koy issues facing the nation. "Clin a nation organized and governed such as ours on dure? That Is tho real ques tion. I lu vti wo the nerve and the will?" Kennedy, who flrat posed these questions in a speech on April IB, 1U5U, re pealed them without change on July IS. To maintain our freedom in the years ahead, said Ken nedy on Oct. 22, 1059, "will require a greater discipline, sacrifice, and vitality than our country baa ever known." This waa rephrased as a question in hla July 13 speech: "Are we willing to match tho liussiun sacrifice of tho present for the future - or must we sacrifice our future In order lo enjoy the present?" Such queatlont, it appears, will loom large in Kennedy's appeal for the support . of "the thinking man", next Nov. 8. (Copyright I960. Congres sional Quarterly Inc.) Wall Street Chatter New York-flJPD-Thls week's Republican convention can be expected to paint a rosier pic ture of the nation's economic health and It would be surpris ing if the market does not show a favorable response, ac cording to B. K. Thurlow of Wlnslow, Cohu and Stetson, Inc. It seems curious, he says, that with lh0 election cam paign now beginning In cur nest, the administration is showing so Utile concern over the steady deterioration in business sentiment t h a t has taken place during the past few weeks. An excellent pretext for stimulating measures now ex ists and these include lower ing interest rates and margin requirements, in the opinion of this financial analyst. Bache and Co. is surprised to see Great Western Finan cial back down io sharply in view of its continued earnings gain. With chances for any adverse legislation slim, Bache lays, GWF's excellent psst record would seem to de serve a higher valuation. The next twelve months should see a leveling off, or at worst a slight decline in bank earnings, according to the Value Line Investment survey. However, with cur rent dividend payments at his torically low levels, a general liberalization of dividend rates appears in prospect. Hornblower and Weeks notes that oil compnny execu tives have stated that improv ed curnlngs during the re mainder of the. year should offset the rather disappoint ing results earlier so that full 1000 income should be about equal to 19S9 or better in some cases. The latter will probably hold true for Stand ard Oil of Indiana, Hornblow er believes.
