This information has been reported by a United Nations official, Jan-Olaf Traung of Sweden, an expert in design of fishing vessels who is at tached to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization. These 70 new fish factory vessels will be built in Poland and East Germany at an esti mated cost of $3 million each, he reported. Russia already has 20 of these factory ships .in oper ation. They will make use of modern mechani zation for catching and proces sing fish, as well as new de- Ex-Medford Student To Receive Degree Portland - Richard Arnold, formerly of 1011 Reddy ave., Medford. will be among the 40 candidates who will re ceive degrees at Lewis and Clark college's summer com mencement. The exercises will be held at 9:30 a.m. Fri day, Aug. 12, in Copeland chapel on campus. Though most of the candi dates are from Portland, one comes from Honolulu and an other from Lapwai, Ida. Two thirds of the students are mar ried and their ages range from 21 to 57. Modification from earlier designs are reported to per mit up to 10-ton catches to be hauled up through the stern chute without damage to the usn. Confirms Information A Soviet UN official con firmed tills information and said these new vessels will have a productive capacity per day that will be 63 per cent higher than earlier models, while productive costs will be cut 18 per cent. Facilities will permit these ships to roam the oceans for three months at a time before returning home. Such opera tions as gutting, producing fish meal or frozen fillets, or extracting liver oil will be performed aboard, and the bulk of the catch will be de livered at the market port in bulk or frozen rather than canned. Japan is still considered the world leader in this field, using factory ships for salmon in the Pacific and for whaling in the Antarctic. The largest of the Japanese refrigerated factory ships is 460 feet long, but there are reports of larger ones in the offing. It would be economically feasible for industrialized na tions to construct vessels of this type in such dimensions, Traung explained. They are appropriate only for nations with plentiful labor at low wages. They are most useful, also, to countries which fish far from home ports. Holds Wide Lead The latest comparative fig ures on fishing production of these three world leaders show Japan with a wide lead, but with Russia close behind the United States for second highest. Japan s total fish catch in 1958 came to 5,505.000 metric tons. The American catch was 2,671,400 tons, and the Soviet catch was 2,621,000 tons. Communist China reported greatly increased fish production-jumping from 2.9 mil lion to 6 million tons from 1957 to 1958. But these fig ures have not been confirmed for accuracy. Russian factory ships have not only been operating off Alaska recently, but off the Newfoundland coast and in the Indian Ocean-an indica tion of the worldwide sphere of Russian fishing plans. I f s.
