"Tho boy who ran into you is tho son of the mayor of this town, and I'm engaged to his sister. Any more questions?" In the pouring rain, an Impatient man stood under the marquee of a Park Avenue hoUl, trying vainly to spot an unoccupied taxi cab. "I've Just got to got out to Idiewlld Airport," he told the doorman. "Keep your shirt on, sir," the doorman told him. "In weather like this, those big plnncs seldom get off tho ground on scheduled time." "This ono won't," agreed tho Impatient gent, "I'm the pilot." 1M0, by Btnaelt Ctrl. Dlitrlbuled by Xlaf Features Syndicate sile Range, some 75 miles northwest of Alamogordo. General Remembers Brigadier Gen. Thomas F. Farrcll, deputy chief of the Wor Department's Manhattan Project, recalled (hat tension was almost unbearable for those who participated In man's first adventure in tap ping tho violent core of trie atom. "We wore reaching Into the unknown and did not know what would come of It," he explained. On the night of July 12 the group of scientists charged with assembling the bomb was near panic. The parts had just arrived from three separate laboratories across the United States. Now, as the experts tried to piece them together, they found two small sections that did not seem to fit. But the Job was finally accom plished. Hie attempt tc unleash tlie tremendous energies binding the nucleus of an atom repre sented the first practical ap plication of what Dr. Albert Einstein had proved on paper with Ills theory of relativity. On the thory, the U.S. gov ernment gambled $2 billion because quality on tho t mi v a WW' XL "MS""!- In less than four years, mobil izing 125,000 workers and technicians - all of whom were in the dark as to what they were supposed to be ac complishing. Possible Flisie Up to the last minute, the scientists at Alamogordo spoke about the possibility of a grand fizzle. Many prayed. At zero hour in pre-dawn darkness, the bomb burst and flowered into a fantastic fire ball that turned the steel tow er on which it rested to vapor. A mountain range hidden five miles off suddenly was illumi nated in every detail by a light which one observer later described as being "golden, purple, violet, gray and blue" at the same time. In an in stant, however, the range was blotted from view by a rising mushroom cloud. Two soldiers crouching be hind the nearest observation post five miles away were bowled over by the blast. One observer 50 miles away made the mistake of not using his two-inch thick dark, glasses and went blind. The shock was felt as an earthquake in neighboring Texas and Arizona. Up to 250 miles away falling plaster and rattling windows touched off rumors of a Japanese attack. The phenomena remained un explained until Aug. 6, when President Truman first an nounced to the world Ameri ca's possession - and use - of atomic power. Before the last echoes of the great explosion had sub sided, staid, respected scien tists like Dr. J. Robert Oppcn hcimer, Dr. Vannevar Bush and Dr. James Conant leaped to their feet and embraced each other. Hug Crater The bomb had gouged a crater a half mile wide in the desert floor and yet it repre sented only one-tenth of one per cent of the energy stored In an atom. "It made chills run up my back," Dr. Donald Leet, Har vard professor of geophysics, said of the blast. "I knew what might happen if it was not controlled." Fifteen years later, with the Alamogordo shot dwarfed by hydrogen fission-fusion bombs thousands of times more des tructive, scientists have no more doubts that the atom can be controlled. But they are not so certain about gov ernments. Winston Churchill was Im mortalizing "the few" who saved Britain and the Allies from their closest scrape in World War II. The few who saved this country in the Battle of Brit ain 20 years ago are far fewer today. Majority Now Dead Official records show that of the 2,000 men who could claim to be Battle of Britain pilots In 1940, less than 300 are still alive. " UPI President Says U.S. Must Try To Understand Thinking of San Francisco -flJPD- The sit uation in Japan is more ba sically stable than recent ex plosive surface events might indicate, but America must come to a more realistic un derstanding of the thinking of the Japanese man in the street. Frank H. Bartholomew, president and general mana ger of United Press Interna tional, said Tuesday. This understanding of the average man in Japan is es sential if the present momem torily advantageous position of the West is to be main tained, he said. Bartholomew spoke at a luncheon meeting of the U.S. Navy San Francisco Bay Area Supply Corps Association at Treasure Island. He recently returned from an extensive Far East tour, which included coverage of the Tokyo riots that led to the cancellation of President Ei senhower's visit to Japan. Both Sides Failed The UPI executive said both the Communists and the West were revealed by last month's events as having failed in their respective ob jectives through inability to win over the Japanese man in the street. The Communists, by ingen tons application of leverage, made an all-out effort to gen crate a civil war that would have siiDnlnnted the essential ly conservative government of Japan with the commissar sys tem," Bartholomew said. "The demonstrations were Dcrfectlv organized and spec tacular, but they remained confined to the controlled groups of left-wing students and left-wing labor unions. The new design for defense against air attack emphasizes smaller forces with superior aircraft, and calls for consid erable redeployment of units. It will take shape over the next several months. Recognizing that the chief military threat to this country is shifting rapidly from bomb ers to missiles, the Air Force blueprint is part of a complete overhaul of the master air de fense plan the administration pushed through Congress in 1959. The Air Force shifts were foreshadowed last April when President Eisenhower re vamped his defense budget, then pending in Congress, to call for more emphasis on bal listic missiles, satellite warn ing systems and missile launching submarines. Approximately half a bil lion dollars in defense funds were shifted to make the shift possible. They came mostly out of anti-aircraft missile and radar budgets.
