My closest friend and I are 21 and are employed by a large corpora tion in our community. Recently Judy confessed to be that she has been having physical relations with one of the employees - here. I had ' known only that she dated him occasionally and had no Idea tilings were this serious. I feel she is making a ter rible mistake and will regret it and soon! This man isn't nice to her and shows no in terest in her except for sex ual purposes. I don't trust him and think he may boast of his conquest. I can't under stand how a nice, attractive girl like Judy tan let herself In for a sordid affair like this Judy T. It's easy for those who know nothing about it to call ours a sordid affair, but just calling names doesn't make it so. I have been In love with Bruce for two years. I know he doesn't love me, but he is very much attracted physical ly. He says he has never de sired anyone else as much. I feel he can. Jove me and eventually he will. One thing I'm 'sure Sandra is all wrong about is the pos sibility that Bruce would do anything to hurt my reputa tion. He just isn't that kind. He's not as bad as that. I am very hopeful that we'll marry soon. A relationship like ours is more beautiful than a love less marriage. The Council: ' Fads' in ro mance change with the times, but basic human relationships change very little and very slowly. It was the fad of the first part of our century to contrast loveless' marriage with an in tense, exciting extramarital relationship. " But this fad has already come the full cycle and the exponents of "romance" out side of marrige have suffered a stunning defeat. Scientific fact has put the finger on this delusion. Psychiatrists working with individuals find that men and women involved in extra. marital affairs have none of the basic elements of love re lationship. In love, there is a strong urge to contribute to the hap piness of the other. In physi cald relationships outside of marriage this doesn't exist. There is the . urge to . take rather than to give. The wom an, almost, invariably, feels hurt and humiliated. The man may talk of his respect for and devotion to the woman, but in practice he shows little real concern for her welfare. Judy is, unfortunately, the victim of an outworn fad. She is whistling in the dark when she talks of the "beauty" of her relationship and the early possibilities of marriage. Some affairs do eventually re sult in marriage, but these marriages are often .unsatis factory with the man feeling trapped and the woman un certain about whether she has won the complete loyalty and devotion of her mate. On the other side of the picture is the fact that few marriages are entirely love less. Problems may arise, but the man and woman who have made a decision to commit themselves to one another have a stronger desire to make a success of -the rela tionship than those who fear or shun such a commitment.. The fact that Judy has con fided in her friend may be an indication that she is looking for someone to help extricate her from her unhappy situa tion. Buts he, alone, must do the job. Judy has already been hurt much, but she can save herself from more hurt by cutting off this tie imme diately. (Copyright 1960, Caneral Features Corp.)
