Al Flcgcl of Roscburg said It was "fine" but thought the pro ccdure of nominating Johnson was "a little rail rnadish" because individual delegates didn't have a chance to vote except by shouting yes or no. He said Johnson will give an element of ma turity to tho Democratic ticket and "keep tho South" safely In Iho party fold. Al Corbctt of Portland thought "Johnson would "add to experience" of Kennedy and would prove an asset in bringing the South along on more liberal programs. Medford Shopping Center Signs Said Violating Ordinance Five signs in the Medford Shopping Center are In viola tion of the city s sign ordi nance, and have been since they were creeled, the city planning commission was told lust night. City Mimnger Robert Duff pointed tills out during dis cussion of a proposed amend ment lo the city' lgn ordi nance In limited commercial lone. Duff made several sugges tions for chnnges in the sign ordlnnnce. but noted Hint even If they wcro adopted most of (he signs would still be in violation of the ordinance, Ordinance 'Unrealistic' Commission Member El- wood Hedberg Jr., asked Duff why Iho ordinance hndn t been enforced. Duff said It wasn't enforced because it is fell that the existing ign ordi nance i "unrealistic." The developers Went ahead and erected them, he said, but did so "al their own risk. According to the existing sign ordinance In the limited commercial zone, signs can be a maximum of 25 square fee' In size, they must be placed flat against the build ing, and may not extend above the building. Only one sign al tho center now conforms to these regu lations, It was pointed out. Duff said that if the signs at the shopping center were made to conform witli the or dinance they could not be read from Hie street. He noted that the buildings are set buck about 200 feet from the street. The question was raised as to whether or not control over signs In shopping centers was realistic at nil. Bolh Commission Chairman Paul Sclby and Member Don ald Walters were of the opin ion that they are. Walters said that the area around the shopping center might eventually turn Into a residential area and there should be some controls. An organizational confer ence for groups opposing cap ital punishment will be held in Los Angeles July 23 and 24, and backers of the move ment hope 300 representa tives of IS organizations will attend. Plans for the drive were announced Thursday by Ros alie Ashcr of Sacramento, an attorney for the late Caryl Chessman; psychiatrist Rod Gorney nnd Lylc Grosjean, an anlt-capual punisnmeni leader.
