Italian Municipal Elections To Bring Test of Feelings Rome -UPD-An estimated 32 million Italians will go to the polls in October to elect city councils, and politicians al ready have started worrying. The municipal elections will be the first nationwide test of the voters' feelings since the general elections of 1958. Po litical confusion and dissen sions inside the anti-Communist camp have in the mean time increased to the point that the ruling party does not appear to have a policy line at all. The Communists and left wing socialists, still working togetner closely despite ideo. logical differences, control one-third of the electorate. In the 1958 elections, the social ists gained and the Commu nists held their ground. Although the October elec tions are only for municipal and provincial councils and not for the national parlia ment, there was little doubt that they would affect the po litical picture considerably. A sharp swing of the vote in any direction could conceiv ably force new general elec tions ahead of the 1963 dead line. The ruling Christian Demo crats are bitterly divided among themselves and at odds with their former allies. They are Italy's largest party, but not big enough to govern alone, and cannot make up their minds on an alliance. Liberals Shunned The middle-road coalition which ruled Italy for over a decade, fighting against both the left and right, fell apart in 1956. The main reason was that the Christian Democrats and two of their smaller part ners, the Social Democrats and Republicans, no longer want ed anything to do with the Liberals, a party championing free enterprise which was the fourth coalition partner. The Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and Repub licans have since tried - so far unsuccessfully - to woo Nenni away from the Commu- Vacationers Urged To Use City Service Mcdford's Chief of Police Charles P, Chmnplin has en couraged vacationing Medford residents to tuke advantage of the city police department's vacation house check service. Chief Champlin said that if residents will notify the po lice station as to when they are leaving on vacation and when they plan to return, the department will check the house at least once each day to make sure everything is in order. He-pointed out too, that an officer will inspect the house with the resident prior to his vacation to make sure every thing is as it should be, and point out the proper proced ures to be taken before leav. ing on a vacation. The serv ice is free. Picard Named Head Of Young Democrats Gary Picard of Medford was affirmed as president of the Jackson County Young Democrats club at a meeting this week. At the same time, the rcsig ation of Charles Langston as president was accepted. Other business transacted included preparations for the state YDC executive meeting here July 23. Plans also were made for the club to handle a part of the concessions at the Jackson County Demo cratic picnic Sunday, July 24. Western Union Asks To Increase Oregon Facilities Salem-OW-Western Union Telegraph Co, lias filed for permission to go ahead with a $60 million transaction for increased facilities, Oregon Public Utility Commissioner Jonel C, Hill snld Thursday The company is asking Hill to approve a proposed Issue of that amount of unsecured promissory notes to cover loans between Nov, 2, 1959 and Jan. 2, 1962. Proceeds will be used for acquisition of property and construction or improvement of facilities and or reim bursement of funds already expended for the expansion. Additions Cited Western Union's application cited a two-yenr total of gross additions to facilities of $150, 700.000, Hill said. The program includes the world's largest and most ad vanced digital data system linking 240 U. S. Air Force installations, a "Telex" dial telegraph-printer service for direct two-way communica tions, a coast to coast micro wave beam system and $51 million in other plant addi tions. Hill added that approval of the notes issue will also be sought from other state reg ulatory bodies.
