Young Senator Enters Major League of American Politics Bv MERRIMAN SMITH Los Angeles fflPll There were golden stairs down the center of the rostrum at the Democratic National Conven tion and Sen. John F. Ken nedy came down them . just like a new contestant in a big money television quiz show. The Los Angeles Sports Arena, dirty and littered with "All the way with LBJ" and "Stevenson for President" signs, exploded inlo applause and the young senator from Massachusetts stepped into the major league of American politics. . When Kennedy appeared before the convention to thank the howling, perspiring delegates for the presidential nomination, it was nearly midnight and the Democrats had been in session continu ously for nearly nine hours. The corsages on some of the lady delegates had willed, and their hair-dos were straggly after hours of leaping up and down in the excitement of Kennedy's victory. The delegates' seats were filled for the first time and so were most of the balconies. Hollywood was on display as Henry Fonda walked among the delegates signing auto graphs and Frank Sinatra and Tony Curtis tried to climb on a photographers stand.
