MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORE.
Young Senator Enters Major
League of American Politics
Bv MERRIMAN SMITH
Los Angeles fflPll There
were golden stairs down the
center of the rostrum at the
Democratic National Conven
tion and Sen. John F. Ken
nedy came down them . just
like a new contestant in a big
money television quiz show.
The Los Angeles Sports
Arena, dirty and littered with
"All the way with LBJ" and
"Stevenson for President"
signs, exploded inlo applause
and the young senator from
Massachusetts stepped into
the major league of American
politics. .
When Kennedy appeared
before the convention to
thank the howling, perspiring
delegates for the presidential
nomination, it was nearly
midnight and the Democrats
had been in session continu
ously for nearly nine hours.
The corsages on some of the
lady delegates had willed, and
their hair-dos were straggly
after hours of leaping up and
down in the excitement of
Kennedy's victory.
Pros Taught Lesson
After Kennedy' and his
highly efficient team of young
political experts ' taught the
old professionals a sound les
son in how to win the nomina
tion, many of the delegates
were ready to lock up the
hall and head for home. The
party, however, had promised
has Angeles . a . convention
lasting through Friday and
that is the way it will be, , .
Wednesday night was the
big one and if noise a no sign
waving had counted, Adlai E.
Stevenson would have won
the nomination. The demon
stration after his name was
placed before the convention
topped by far anything up to
that point.
' But when the roll call
came, the cheers counted for
nothing and it was the care
ful, incredibly detailed plan
ning of the Kennedy team
that bowled over all the es
tablished figures of the party
except those smart enough to
have spotted Kennedy as a
comer.
Hollywood on Display
On hand was the biggest
crowd of the convention, at
times approaching the 22,500
seating capacity of the arena.
The delegates' seats were
filled for the first time and so
were most of the balconies.
Hollywood was on display as
Henry Fonda walked among
the delegates signing auto
graphs and Frank Sinatra and
Tony Curtis tried to climb on
a photographers stand.
On the perimeter of the
arena, every entrance was
clogged by those pleading for
admission tickets. Pick
pockets snatched credentials
from the lapels of delegates
and raced inside. Some party
enthusiasts did likewise. One
man got on the convention
floor simply by tying a piece
of cord around his neck and

Care of Freezer
Provides Proper
Care of Appliance
As with other modern appli
ances, the proper operation of
a home food freezer depends
on the care it receives. How
ever, cleaning and care of
the freezer actually requires
minimum of time and ef
fort.
For cleaning and polishing
outer surfaces, use any of the
mild preparations ordinarily
used for porcelain. Do not use
ammonia cleaners, strong al
kalies, or abrasives.
From time to time, wipe
down the porcelain surfaces
with a weak solution of laun
dry bleach. This will restore
whiteness and remove siains
Rinse the bleaching solution
off with clear water and pol
ish surfaces dry.
riBn.TvD Unit
If the freezer has a sealed
in mechanism, it should never
require lubrication. If it is
the open-type unit, read the
manufacturers' instruc t i o n s
about oiling, and follow them
to the letter.
If the freezer has a finned
type condenser which is ac
cessible, check it two or three
times a year and remove dust
or lint gently with a brush
or whisk broom. Accumulat
ed dust will also come off
cleanly with a radiator-cleaning
attachment for a vacuum
cleaner.
If it becomes necessary to
defrost or clean the inside of
the freezer, it can be done a
shelf at a time-starting with
the top shelf. Remove all
foods from the shelf and wrap
them in newspaper or place
them in the refrigerator to
prevent thawing.
Remove frost carelully by
scraping with a dull knife or
a plastic scraper.. Use of an
ice pick or any other snarp
instrument may seriously
damage the freezer. Shelf and
walls may then be washed
in the same manner as ine
outside of the freezer. Be sure
to dry thoroughly before re
placing the frozen food pack
ages. When accumulated frost
cannot be removed easily in
this manner, remove all food
from the freezer and store to
keep cold. Disconnect the
freezer and allow frost to
thaw, then wash and dry
walls and shelves. Allow
freezer door to stand open
until all surfaces , are thor
oughly dry before returning
foods to the freezer.
