Schoendienst's batting aver- School Board Wants Tourney Kept at Eugene Eugene-WPD-The Eugene School District No. 4 board of directors has gone on rec ord in favor of keeping the Oregon state Class . A-l high school basketball tournament In Eugene. The board in a resolution addressed . to the Oregon Scholastic Activities associa tion, said that under the di rection of the Eugene Active club for the past 13 years, the tournament had provided good supervision in private homes for students, a whole some atmosphere, and an op portunity for high school youngsters to visit the univer sity campus. The Eugene board directed Superintendent Millard Z. Fond to forward the resolu tion to the OSAA and also to the Oregon Association of School Boards. The new Portland Exposition-Recreation center has re quested that the tournament be moved to Portland in 1962. The 1961 tournament is al ready scheduled for Eugene. A committee here has been active in attempting to block the move to Portland. The OSAA at its May meeting di rected its secretary-treasurer,. A. Joev Giambra Defeats Hughes Fort Erie, Ont. (UPD - Joey Giambra, who once was a top ranked contender for the mid dleweight crown, says after one more fight he'll be ready for champion Gene Fullmer. "I'm hungry for Fullmer," said the Buffalo-born Giam bra after scoring a second- round knockout over BobDy Hughes of Erie, Pa., Tuesday night at the Fort Erie arena. But now the signs are def inite that if Cottier, a clean cut kid from Delta, Colo., can Just raise his .200 batting av erage a little bit, he's going to put Schoendienst out of the starting lineup for good at least with the Braves. Schoendienst has not start ed a game since July 1, and aDDeared only once as a pincn- hitter since then. Dressen has already decided that Cottier is a better fielder men Sscno- endienst and is prepared to give the kid a good long shot at the job. For Schoendienst it is al most an unbelievably fast shift of fortune. Before the season started, rtea sam ne was fully recovered from the tuberculosis and ready to play, but on one else was really sure. Then the season started, and immediately S c h o e ndienst proved he was able bodied. Sign Up Days Set for Class At Jackson Pool Registration for the city's second session of swimming classes at the Jackson park pool will start Thursday, July 21, and run through Sunday, July 24. Classes for the second ses sion of swimming instruction will start on Monday, July 25, and run through Aug. 5. Parks and Recreation Direc tor Robert Haworth points out that this schedule is dif ferent than the one that was publicized at the beginning of the season. A postponement in the schedule was necessary, he said, due to repainting of the Jackson park swimming pool. The schedule for Hawthorne pool will remain the same, he noted. A special swimming class for Gold Hill residents starts Monday, July 18 at Jackson pool and will continue through July 29. The third session of city sponsored swimming classes will start on Aug. 8. Haworth said if there is a demand for further swimming instruction there will be a fourth session starting Aug. 22. Hunting Permit Requests Due For Antelope Portland-Bie game hunters are advised they have until July 18 to submit applications for this year's antelope hunt. Aug. 1 for controlled deer seasons, Aug. 8 for unit deer permits, and Aug. 29 for elk permits. These are tne closing dates for submitting applica tions and those received by the game commission after the closing deadlines will not be included in the public draw ings. The public drawing to de termine successful applicants for the antelope hunt will be held on July 25. A total of 900 antelope permits will be issued for the six antelope units. A fee of $5.00 must be remitted with each applica tion. This fee will be return ed to hunters unsuccessful in the drawing. Hunters receiv ing antelope tags in the past two years are not eligible to apply this year. Drawing date for the con trolled deer seasons is set for Aug. 8, drawings for unit deer permits, Aug. 15, and for elk permits, Sept. 7. Hunt ing licenses and application forms are now available through all license agents. The game commission urges all hunters to get their ap plications in as soon as pos sible. PISTONS ACQUIRE OHL Detroit (UPD Ex-Illinois guard Don Ohl was acquired by the Detroit Pistons from the Philadelphia Warriors Monday in a National Basket ball association deal that in volved "considerably more than the $500 waiver price," according to Piston General Manager Nick Kerbawy. Auto Races Slated for Saturday Super-modified auto racing returns to Ashland speedway this Saturday night. Time trials arc set for 7 p.m. and the first race is planned for 8 p.m. Promoter Jack McCoy has just returned from a Cali fornia trip. He conferred with racing club officials and oth er track managers to work out an agreement so that race dates will not conflict. This means that each track can have a larger field of cars on its operating night. Gene's garage, Klamath Falls, is building a new car which will be driven by Dale Hankins at Ashland this Sat urday. This car has several unique modifications. It is powered by a Ford Thunder bird engine which is boosted by a supercharger. This ve hicle looks like a real 'bomb." Clark Coming Sherman Clark, Yuba City, Calif., is to return with the Corvette-powered No. 14 Blue Chip special which won the last main event at Ashland. With the auto he swept the last card at Klamath Falls. Last Saturday at Redding, Calif., he won his heat and the main. Sherm indicates he'll gun for the lion's share of the $1,000 purse. Joe C a p p e 1 1 o, Alturas, Calif., second in the main at the last Klamath outing, will have his fast Chevrolet at Ashland this Saturday. It will be his first appearance at the Valley View oval. However. he's reportedly a driver who isn t bothered by a strange track. Napoleon Reyes Picked To Pilot Shifted Team Jersey City, N.J.-IUPD- Na poleon Reyes; 40-year-old for mer New York Giants infield- er, will take over as tempor ary manager of the transplant ed Jersey City baseball club when it plays its first Interna tional League game here Fri day night. Reyes, whose job is scouting for the Cincinnati Reds in the U.S. and the Caribbean is lands, will handle the team until a permanent manager can be hired. Tony Castano resigned as manager last week when the International League ordered the transfer of the Cuban Sugar Kings from Havana to Jersey City because of un settled conditions in Cuba. United Press International Herb Moford, 3 31 - year- old right-hander who had trials with a few major league clubs, pitched a one-hit game Tuesday night, enabling the last-place Miami Marlins to beat the transplanted Jersey City club, 4-0. The only hit Moford yielded was a second-inning single by second baseman Pompey Da valli of Jersey City. The vic tory was Moford's fourth against seven defeats. In other games, the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Buf falo Bisons, 7-4; the Columbus Jets edged the Richmond Vir ginians, 4-5, and the Roches ter Red Wings beat the Mon treal Royals, 6-1. Coast League Play Resumes United Press International The California faction of the Pacific Coast league swings back into action to night while the rest of the league grabs another day's rest. San Diego and Sacramento will meet in the Solons' home park, the first PCL game to be played since Monday's All Star contest at Spokane. A full schedule of games is on tap for Thursday. San Diego will again be at Sacra mento while Vancouver plays at Portland, Spokane opens a series at Seattle, and Salt Lake hosts Tacoma. HUFFMAN NAMED Baker -aiPD- Earl Huffman, 32, who compiled a 31-12 won loss record during the past four years at Kalama, Wash., has been named football coach at Baker High school, it was announced Tuesday. He will replace Stan Smith, who resigned to become coach at Ashland High school. Huff man is a graduate of the Uni versity of Idaho. Forest Grove-UIPD-The Dal las Cowboys, newest team in the National Football league, announced Tuesday at their training site here that they have obtained eight-year NFL veteran linebacker Leo San ford from the Baltimore Colts in a trade.
