t f i ! t if 10 c DeAnne Taylor Writes About School, Life of West Berlin Edllor'i note: The follow' lug are excerpli from ie etnt lettera received from De Anne Taylor, who i pending tht tummer monthi with a family in Wait Eerlln, Garmany. un dar tha auipiciai of tha American Field latvica. Sha It tha daughtar of Mr. and Mra. DaVara Taylor. 1011 Winchaitar va Madford. Sha left Madford aarly in Juna. and will return in Septambar. In fha follow ing, Mii Taylor wrilai of choollng. music. ocial Ufa. and thought! of American indapendanca in Germany. By DaANNE TAYLOR I'm a school girl again. I have .been going to school withthe girls, Ursula, 17, and Heidi. School is so different. It is in a rather old brick building and the school yard, in front, is all gravel. There are 13 grades, each grade having several classes or forms, as Ursula calls them. They are lettered A, B, etc. Ernst, Heidi, and Ursula are all in the same school. There are about 950 stu dents. Each class is 45 minutes long with 15 minutes between each class. Some of the stu dent! have 14 or more sub jects, but, as I suspected, they . don't have them all in one day. For instance, Ursula has English three times a week. The students stand when the ' teacher comes in, but they chatter constantly during class. Usually the teacher moves instead of the students except for such classes as art, music, and physics. Enjoy School The head master told me he didn't think I would enjoy the school, not knowing the language. I admit that a better knowl edge of German would help, but I enjoyed going to English-classes. Ernst, 11, is just ' beginning English but he has had Latin. I read a paragraph . in each class and the students compared .the pronunciation to theirs. They learn "Eng- lish" Enelish and some of the '. expressions are strange to me. AnnUinr difference in this school from ours is that the students, and teachers too, are always eating. During the breaks you can see sandwich es, apples, prunes, cherries, almost anything you can name. School is out in about three weeks (July 15) for a six weeks "holiday," but there are no tests because it is not the end of the term. At Free University I spent one day with Hanni at the Free university of Ber lin. It was built from a grant given by the Ford foundation. There are about 20 buildings. most of them qulle modern. There are almost 11.000 stu dents from all over the world. Hanni said there are quite a few American students, and ihnt I could bo to one of their meetings if I wished. We ate lunch in a little park m uan lem where most of the Ameri can soldiers and their families live. It seemed so strange to hooT- thr kids nlavins in the sandboxes, speaking English. The lectures and lessons i attended were on English dramatists. They discussed T. s Flint and were reading the play "Murder In The Cathe dral." It reminded me of "Christ In the Concrete City.' f A local nresentation bv mem bers of DcAnne's church in Medford). Cost Par Semester Hanni says she pays about $35 per semester. Sne nas to pay about 75 cents per lesson nlus a fee at the beginning. It was interesting to note that the students were from an over, but Hanni said those from West Germany can stay only a year due to lack of snare Wednesday evening (June 22) Ursula and I went to a Philharmonic concert. The music selections were Tchai kovsky's Opus 35, and Dvor ak's symphony No. 7, featur ing Norman Dell Joio. I am not too familiar with either the music or the instrumental ist, but I enjoyed it very much. Planning io Move Heidi, who Is 16, is leaving oai-iu In Julv for a school in Gtirittni'lnnri The family is planning to move there next vcar because of the situation in Berlin. Heide has to go early in order to take tests so that h won't have to spend turn more years in senooi hnK. she l tn a position .similar to mine. She didn't think she wnnlH have to leave so early and she hasn't had enough Prnnrh. Saturday night (June 25) I went to a garden party with Hanni, 18, and her boy friend, nplririch. It started about 8 p.m. and we didn't get home until about 3 a.m. Hanni says parties usually last until 1 or 3 a.m., but last year they had one that lasted until 4 in the morning. I was tired. The garden was quite nice with a little sum mer house and lots of trees and flowers. They hung paper lanterns and when it got dark they put candles in and light ed them. Political Situation No one talks much about the political situation here. However, at the party every one lit a match as a symbol of a free and united Berlin. It was a beautiful ceremony. Yesterday afternoon (June 26) Ursula and I visited a friend of hers. Her friend's name is Christa. We took the train there. The Shelle's have two cars, a Mercedes and a Volkswagen, but they use them only for business and shopping. We usually walk or take the bus. Christa's father is a pro fessor of theology and an ac complished musician. Christa has been lo Eng land, and has had English girls stay with her. Two of them are coming at the be ginning of the six weeks holi day. t atnr in the evening we tnnt the train to the Wald- bukne, an open air theater, where we saw part of the In ternational Film I e s i iv a i. There was a jazz band and several foreign movie stars. The movie starred a popular German singer, Freddy Quinn, and was entitled "Freddy and Melodie dcr Nacht." It wasn't i Hiffir-ult to understand. There were fireworks after ward which reminded me of th Fourth of July. Four Different Pools I've been swimming in the ni 9rn the street from the Schelle's house. There are fr,,,- nnnU of different sizes and depths. I've never seen so many bikinis. The pools are crowded like Hawthorne on a- hot day. : The scenery around tne Schelle home is lovely. When we go for walks one minute we are by apartment houses ind the next in a little park. Thoro are lots of trees and flowers. There is a small hill near hv which was built from rnhhish after the war. It is very unique and thought pro voking. Now it is covered with trpps and vegetation. There are. no signs oi war damage. Mrs Krhelle won t let tne girls take me across to East Berlin, but Mr. Augermann, the AFS counselor in Berlin, has written that a tour of East Berlin is being planned for later on this summer. T will he thinking of you on the Fourth of July. I didn't rpalize how much it would mean until I found myself miles away from home.
