S. offi cials said the U. S. Embassy in Leopoldville was surrounded by a mob including ..many Negro soldiers who no longer have white officers. The mob also has cut off the road from Leopoldville to the airport, presumably to prevent white persons from getting away. : The officials said that mem bers of the embassy, including Ambassador - designate Clare Timberlake, could not get out of the embassy. Price erosion set ,ln after the fourth hour but centered generally in stocks used to compile the averages. Vending machines, electron ics, some rails and utilities resisted much of the selling when it occurred. Vendo and Universal Match retained most of their earlier strength, as did cameras, drugs and metals. Utilities flirted with a new 30-year high on average most of the day. DOW -JONES AVERAGES New York-WIV-Dow-Jones final stock averages: 30 in dustrials 846.91, up 2.02; 20 railroads 142.29, up 0.55; 15 utilities 94.87, up 0.37,, and 65 stocks 212.82, up 0.73. Members of 4-H clubs from Jackson, Curry and Douglas counties are expected to at tend, Glenn Klein, county ex tension agent, said. All of them made the cov ered wagon trek to Corvallis last year. The members and their guests will hold a lamb bar becue followed by a campfire and skits Saturday night, Sunday morning's program includes a ranch breakfast, church services and special entertainment. Agriculture Secretary Ezra T. Benson told a news confer ence Thursday that the slap at Fidel Castro's anti-American regime probably would have no noticeable effect on sugar supplies or prices in this country. Robert H. Shields, presi dent of the U.S. Beet Sugar association, said the United States could take up the slack by buying sugar from 11 for eign countries with available supplies. Crew Mops Up Fire On Kane Creek A four-man state depart ment of forestry crew was mopping up this morning on a 25-acre brush and slash fire in the Ike Orr logging opera Iton on Kane creek, the south west district headquarters re ported. The district office said that the blaze started about 1:30 p.m. "yesterday, apparently from sparks from a tread tractor. A crew of 12 stale forestry patrolmen and 19 "pick-up" fire fighters was sent to the scene. Logger crewmen also fought the blaze. A six-man pick-up crew patrolled the area last night. The state forestry office also reported a one-half acre grass fire along Highway 86 near Emigrant lake about 9:30 p.m. ysctcrday. Pendleton Takes Hot Spot Honors By United Press International Pendleton took over from Mcdford and The Dalles as Oregon's hot spot Thursday with a temperature of 103. Medford had 99 compared to 103 on Wednesday and The Dalles dropped 9 degrees to 94. The weather man said that although no rain was Indicat ed temperatures should be cooler. Highs up to 94 in east ern Oregon and to 90 in south west interior Oregon were ex pected through Saturday with cooler readings elsewhere. Not much change in the present weather pattern is in dicated for the next five days, the weather bureau said. Kennedy forces continued their drlvo for an early ballot victory. Assured of California Gov. Edmund G, Brown's backing, they hoped to add two more favorite- sou govern ors to their camp. Rep, James Roosevelt (D-Callf.), son of the lale President, formally got aboard the Kennedy band wagon today, and a union source told United Press In ternational that the "big 3" of organized lubor were prl vutely backing Kennedy. Johnson came to town to day to direct his drive. Stevenson declared his availability by telephone to Thursday night with a dime- store bracelet as a good luck charm. Linda Bcment of Salt Lake City, whose five feet six inch es is crowned with a jet black, trench twist hair-do, won the right to compete against 44 foreign beauties for a crack at the Miss Universe title. Field To Be Narrowed She goes against the visitors tonight when the field will be narrowed to IS for the Saturday night finale. Lightning Causes Fires Near Yreka Yrcka - Klamath national forest headquarters today re ported "quite a few lightning strikes" and four minor fires during a two-hour storm in the area last night. A spokesman suld all fires were brought under control quickly. The storm lasted from about 8 to 10 p.m. Three fires were In the Goose Nest district which be gins about IS miles east of Montague and the fourth was In the Callahan district at the south end of Scott valley.
