Collcgo Jazz fans, 12,000 strong, turned this New Eng lund millionaires' playground Into a shumblcs Saturday night when they rioted be cause they were unablo to gain admittance to the sold out concert. The posh playground turn ed into a battleground when students hurling beer cans, whiskey bottles and rocks clashed with city nnd state police reinforced by the Mu rines, Navy, National Guard and firemen, Nona Sarlously Hurt The riot was put down by tear gas grenades and fire hoses. At least 12S persons were Injured in the melee, none seriously. Police road blocks scaled off the Island from the rest of the stale. The Newport City Council cut the five-day, seventh an nual concert short after its Sunday matinee performance. It cancelled Sunday night's concert and two scheduled to day. 'That's the last jazz festival that will ever come to New port," City Manager George Blsson said. Festival President Louis L. Lorillard announced today the festival intended to sue the city for $4 million "suffer er In losses and damages" re sulting from cancellations. He said the July 2 disturbances "were beyond control of the festival itself." Paddy Wagons Busy Meanwhile, 27 young men arrested on the beaches Sun day for resisting police were arraigned today. An almost continuous shuttle of paddy wagons brought more than 200 rioters to Jails Saturday night. Only seven wero fined and one was ordered to stand trial later. The others were held overnight and released Sunday without charge. The scene was quiet toduy. A ban on liquor was lifted ond tho city's beaches, closed after the riots, were open ogain to Fourth of July crowds. Someone began pushing and the crowd got out of hand. Theft Problem Solved; Owner Says Different CamllluB, N. Y. - The fa ther of a 13-yoar-old boy call ed sheriff's deputies to report he had uncovered a cache of audio equipment hidden at home by his son. Deputies questioned the boy and a 13year-old pal and re covered six car speakers, an electric car counter, a tele phone hand set and some cash boxes, all stolen from a drive in theater here. The officers finished taking inventory of the loot and then hurried to tell the theater owner that they finally had found the vandals who had been plaguing him so long. The theater owner was glad to see the deputies. He was just about to phone in a report of the theft of three telephone hand sets, a fire extinguisher, an intercom and a table radio.
