The posh playground turn
ed into a battleground when
students hurling beer cans,
whiskey bottles and rocks

The riot was put down by
tear gas grenades and fire
hoses. At least 12S persons
were Injured in the melee,
none seriously. Police road
blocks scaled off the Island

The Newport City Council
cut the five-day, seventh an
nual concert short after its
Sunday matinee performance.
It cancelled Sunday night's
concert and two scheduled to
day. 'That's the last jazz festival
that will ever come to New
port," City Manager George

the festival intended to sue
the city for $4 million "suffer
er In losses and damages" re
sulting from cancellations. He

Paddy Wagons Busy

trial later. The others were
held overnight and released

Theft Problem Solved;

ther of a 13-yoar-old boy call
ed sheriff's deputies to report
he had uncovered a cache of
audio equipment hidden at
home by his son.
Deputies questioned the boy
and a 13year-old pal and re
covered six car speakers, an
electric car counter, a tele
phone hand set and some cash
boxes, all stolen from a drive
in theater here.
The officers finished taking
inventory of the loot and then
hurried to tell the theater
owner that they finally had
found the vandals who had
been plaguing him so long.
The theater owner was glad
to see the deputies. He was
just about to phone in a report
of the theft of three telephone
hand sets, a fire extinguisher,
an intercom and a table radio.
