WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29. 19EB MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. QBE. Jeep Observes 20th Birthday As Tough Vehicle Toledo, Ohio OIPB-The Jeep the go anywhere vehicle which was given its name by a million GIs, is 20 years old this week. It is no longer an olive drab, rugged workhorse. The modern Jeep made for civil ian market comes in 14 mod els, Is often two tone and looks plush next to its crusty Army predecessor. It is still tough and finds its biggest market among farmers. Durine World War II. th Army knew the Jeep as a irucK, one-quarter ton. ' Nickname Recognized That's still the official des ignation. But the Army has yielded and recognized the nickname "Jeep" as the ve hicle's semi-official title. Since 1947, about 400,000 Jeep-patterned vehicles have been sold. Willys Overland tried to produce a passenger car near ly 10 years ago. It quit in 1953, when Kaiser Industries purchased the company. But the Aero Willys is still pro duced in South America. S. A. Girard, Willys presi dent, said, "We have no in tention, no desire to re-enter the passenger car field." Willys lost nearly $20 mil lion in 1954, the first full year under Kaiser. Since then it has been in the black. Last year it earned $10.5 million. Willys is the largest exporter of small vehicles. Exports dominated its market until 1959, when U. S. sales match ed shipments abroad. "We are now opening new markets in Africa and the Far East," Girard said. New Line Planned He also disclosed that Wil lys will bring out a new line of utility vehicles in about year. He forecast a 10 per cent increase in Jeep sales this year over 1959. Willys employs 6000 here and makes Jeeps in 19 foreign countries. One of the nation's oldest auto companies, Willys start ed in 1903 and created the first all-steel station wagon in 1946. No typical auto industry fanfare is planned for the an niversar yof the Jeep. Coos Bay Man Killed in Kansas Belleville, Kan.-UIPD - Four persons were killed late Tues day night in a grinding head on collision between two cars on U. S. Highway Patrolman Bob Huerter said the accident oc curred about 11:15 p.m. on a straight stretch of the high way: One of the cars was driven by Horton. McKay was lone in the other vehicle. WALZER UPI Financial Editor New York-OIPD-One hundred years ago just about this time Standard & Poor's was born. 1 It's difficult ?? I to spot the exact date be cause none at the time could anticipate that Poor's Manuel of Railroads, published by Henry Var num Poor, was to be the fore Elmer Waller runner of the giant statistical agency which includes his name. And it wasn't a very propi tious time for anyone or any thing to be born, especially a compendium on existing corporations. We were on the brink of a civil war on one hand and recovering from the panic of 1857 on the other. It wasn't that one couldn t publish information. Freedom of the press had been assured 125 years earlier when John Peter Zenger had been ac quitted of seditious libel for criticizing the colonial gov ernment. But it wasn't easy to get the kind of information Poor put into his manual. Corporations of 100 years ago most of them in the transportation industry which included railroads, canals, and turnpikes just didn't think information of their opera tions was anybody's business but the few on the inside. Others Extend Field Poor thought otherwise and he set out to get Information of value to investors of his day. His first manual was only 200 pages in length and it bore the imposing title, "His- Political Newcomer Winner in Idaho Boise-IUPD-Democrat Robert McLaughlin, a winner in his first venture at national po litics, will meet incumbent Republican Sen. Henry Dwor shak in November. McLaughlin, 40, gathered in votes with surprising ease Tuesday night in the party's runoff election to defeat Gregg Potvin, 35 - year-old American Falls lawyer, in sparce balloting that some figured cost the taxpayers more than $2.50 a vote. With 856 precincts com plete out of 886 in the state McLaughlin had an unofficial 12,906 votes to Potvin'j 12, 021. CADILLACS EXPECTED New York -fliPD- City Coun cil Majority Leader Joseph T. Sharkey has submitted a bill to the council calling for garages and parking lots to accept all cars regardless of size. Sharkey complained Tuesday that some garages In the city had refused to park his Cadillac limousine because it took up too much room. PLUMBING & SHEET METAL CO. .. 5e tq. ft. Trayi w e i.' v ... .08 per ft. ..... Parking Space Time tory of the Railroads and the Canals of the United States." As Poor was putting his book together, Dun was com peting with Bradstreet for the business of listing credit rat ings, railroad building was go ing along at a fast clip, the stock exchange was thriving on dealings in governments, railroads, and gold, and the base was being laid for fu ture industrial giants in steel and oil. Poor persisted In his invest ment information service and eventually published a manual on industrials. Others entered the field, including John Moody, Roger W. Babson, and Luther Lee Blake who found ed Standard Statistics Bureau in 1906. Compressing history a bit, the Moody Manual company was merged with Poor's in 1919, and the name changed to Poor's Publishing company. Poor's established its regis ter of directors in 1928. Stand ard Statistics continued to grow and by 1928 employed 500 persons. In 1941 Standard Statistics Geologist's Quake Prediction Filled Fontana, Calif. -WPII- "It Is impossible to predict an earth quake, but geologists have a hunch that Southern Califor nia Is about due." So said Cal Tech Geologist Dr. Richard Johns Monday in a Civil Defense Council con ference address in Santa Mon ica, Calif. At 1:01.58 p.m. Tuesday -less than 24 hours after the scientist's prediction - an earthquake shook a wide area of San Bernardino county. The Cal Tech Selsmological Laboratory at Pasadena re corded the temblor as having a magniture of 5 on the Rich ter scale of 10. A spokesman pinpointed the quake at 40 miles east of the laboratory, a location that records sev eral shakes each , year. No damage was reported. Grange Notes Central Point Grange A social night is planned for members of Central Point Grange and their friends July 1 at 8 p.m. The lecturer, Mrs. Homer Jeffries, and Mrs. Gas ton Floux, recreation chair man, have arranged a varied program. The musical part of the program will be furnished by the family of Mr. and Mrs Jeffries, who are visiting here this summer. Games and oth er numbers will be included on the program. The remainder of the eve ning will be for visiting or playing cards. Those wishing to play cards are asked to bring card tables and cards. Refreshments will be served by committee. The Brush Rider's picnic grounds at Williams creek, was the scene of the Grange picnic Sunday, June 26. About 40 Grangers attended as guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Lathrop, charter members of Central Point Grange who have moved to Williams to make their home. 4-H Club News The Westside Hayburneri 4-H Horse club held their reg ular meeting at the home of Linda Smith June 27. Plans for the 4-H playday to be put on by the Westside Hayburners July 3 at 11 a.m. at the 4-H fairgrounds were discussed. All are welcome as spectators. The admission is free. The next meeting will be held at the home of Bonnie and Mary Cheney, Wednes day. July 13, at 10 a.m. The meeting was adjourned and refreshments served. , Bonnie Cheney, Reporter By Jimmy Hatlo No WONDER rfS OFF THE RECORD ANY TEN-YEAR-OLD KID COULD MAKE A BETTER TALK merged with Poor's Publish ing company and became Standard at Poor s Corpora tion, boasting it was the world's largest investment ad visory service and financial publisher. Millions of Words Today Standard Sc Poor's publishes daily, weekly, monthly, and annual reports. Its publications include corp oration records, dividend rec ords, bond records, new is sues services, listed stock re ports, over - the - counter and regional exchanges stock re ports, stock guide, bond guide and myraid others. One of its more widely known publica tions is "The Outlook," a weekly stock market analysis. Standard & Poor's is wide ly known for its stock indexes which include 500 issues or about 94 per cent of the value of the common stock listed on the New York stock Ex change. Today it isn't a matter of getting corporation informa tion and publishing it. The prospective and regular in vestor finds his biggest prob lem in getting enough time to read all of it. Standard & Poor's not only publishes millions of words on corporate information, but it also manages some $3 bil lion of portfolios of corpora tions and individuals. It also maintains a library reported to be the largest and oldest private collection of fi nancial and statistical records in the world. Henry Varnum Poor's fond est dreams have been realized today with corporations forced by law to divulge the information he had to pry from them 100 years ago.
