Fcrrarese blanked league leading Spokane on a crisp six-hitter Tuesday night to pace the seventh place Padres in a 1-0 victory over the In dians. San Diego's win allowed the second place Solons and third place Giants to pick up a full game apiece on the front running Indians. Sacra mento trimmed its deficit to two and one-half games with a 9-1 romp over Portland and Tacoma pulled within three games of the leaders by de feating Vancouver, 12-3. In the other PCL game played Tuesday night, Salt Lake moved to within a half game of the first division by downing fourth place Seattle, 7-4, on Harry Bright's grand slam homer in the eighth in ning. Ferrarese kept the Indians off balance with sliders and curves while striking out nine and walking only three to register his second win in three decisions. Floyd Robin son provided the Padres' win ning run when he connected for a bases empty homer in the third inning, Sacramento unleashed an 11-hit attack which produced two four-run innings to turn in the lopsided win over Port land. Veteran Elmer Single ton spaced nine Beaver hits as he went the distance and gained his seventh victory in 10 decisions this season. Jack Littrell and Al Heist each contributed a homer to the Solon hitting attack. Heist's was a two-run effort in the seventh inning and Littrell's was a solo clout in the fourth. A wild third inning, in which eight unearned runs were scored, made the dif ference here last night as Klamath Falls downed Grants Pass 10 to 5 in an American Legion junior baseball con flict at Cheney field. Yank Ladies Ousted In Wimbledon Play Wimbledon, England-IUPu- Neale Fraser and Rod Laver were heavy favorites to win their semi-final matches in Wimbledon tennis champion ships today and set up an all Australian battle for the men's singles crown. Top-seeded Fraser, who won the U.S. national champion ship at Forest Hills, N.Y., last year, was pitted against Ram anthan Krishnan of India, and third-seeded Laver faced Nico la Pietrangcli of Italy. It marked the first time since World War II that the United States was not repre sented in the semifinals of the men's singles. Barry Mackay of Dayton, O., was eliminated by Piet rangcli and Earl Buchholz of St. Louis defaulted to Fraser because of painful leg injuries in Monday's quarter-finals. The Yanks lost further pres tige Tuesday when their final two survivors in the women's singles were eliminated. Christine Truman of England turned back Karen Hantze of San Diego, Calif., 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Sandra Reynolds of South Africa ousted Darlene Hard of Montcbello, Calif., 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. The elimination of the Cali fornia blondes, following on the heels of the Yanks' "black Monday" show, left the US., without a player in either of the singles semifinals for the first time in 35 years. The only U.S. hopes remain ing were in the doubles, and even there prospects were not too bright. Buchholz and his St. Louis buddy Chuck McKinley, were forced to pull out of the men's doubles because of Earl's severe ankle injury, leaving a pick-up team of Mackay and Ron Holmberg of Brook lyn to carry on alone for the Yanks.
