By ORVILLE BOYINGTON
United Press International
The Sacramento Solons and
the Tacoma Giants of the Pa
cific Coast league today owe
hearty thanks to Don Fer
rarese, San Diego's stingy
lefthander.
Fcrrarese blanked league
leading Spokane on a crisp
six-hitter Tuesday night to
pace the seventh place Padres
in a 1-0 victory over the In
dians. San Diego's win allowed
the second place Solons and
third place Giants to pick up
a full game apiece on the
front running Indians. Sacra
mento trimmed its deficit to
two and one-half games with
a 9-1 romp over Portland and
Tacoma pulled within three
games of the leaders by de
feating Vancouver, 12-3.
In the other PCL game
played Tuesday night, Salt
Lake moved to within a half
game of the first division by
downing fourth place Seattle,
7-4, on Harry Bright's grand
slam homer in the eighth in
ning. Ferrarese kept the Indians
off balance with sliders and
curves while striking out
nine and walking only three
to register his second win in
three decisions. Floyd Robin
son provided the Padres' win
ning run when he connected
for a bases empty homer in
the third inning,
Sacramento unleashed an
11-hit attack which produced
two four-run innings to turn
in the lopsided win over Port
land. Veteran Elmer Single
ton spaced nine Beaver hits
as he went the distance and
gained his seventh victory in
10 decisions this season.
Jack Littrell and Al Heist
each contributed a homer to
the Solon hitting attack.
Heist's was a two-run effort
in the seventh inning and
Littrell's was a solo clout in
the fourth.
A wild third inning, in
which eight unearned runs
were scored, made the dif
ference here last night as
Klamath Falls downed Grants
Pass 10 to 5 in an American
Legion junior baseball con
flict at Cheney field.
Southern division activity
in Area 4 continues at the
local park this evening. Med
ford Coca Cola and Central
Point Cheney Studs vie at 8
p.m. Central Point won the
only previous meeting be
tween the two clubs 2 to 1
in 13 innings.
Klamath started off the
scoring last night by picking
up a sole run in the first in
ning on back to back doubles
by Rich DePew and Bruce
Brickner.
The eight third frame runs
were on two walks, two stolen
bases, three errors, four sing
gles, a triple by DePew, and
seven passed balls.
Run In Seventh
Klamath gained its final
run in the seventh on a walk,
an error, a fielders choice,
and DePew's sacrifice fly.

Grants Pass tallied one run
on a hit batter, a stolen base
and Denny Walker's third
consecutive single.

In Wimbledon Play
Wimbledon, England-IUPu-
Neale Fraser and Rod Laver
were heavy favorites to win
their semi-final matches in
Wimbledon tennis champion
ships today and set up an all
Australian battle for the
men's singles crown.
Top-seeded Fraser, who won
the U.S. national champion
ship at Forest Hills, N.Y., last
year, was pitted against Ram
anthan Krishnan of India, and
third-seeded Laver faced Nico
la Pietrangcli of Italy.
It marked the first time
since World War II that the
United States was not repre
sented in the semifinals of
the men's singles.
Barry Mackay of Dayton,
O., was eliminated by Piet
rangcli and Earl Buchholz of
St. Louis defaulted to Fraser
because of painful leg injuries
in Monday's quarter-finals.
The Yanks lost further pres
tige Tuesday when their final
two survivors in the women's
singles were eliminated.
Christine Truman of England
turned back Karen Hantze of
San Diego, Calif., 4-6, 6-4,
6-4, and Sandra Reynolds of
South Africa ousted Darlene
Hard of Montcbello, Calif.,
6-1, 2-6, 6-1.
The elimination of the Cali
fornia blondes, following on
the heels of the Yanks' "black
Monday" show, left the US.,
without a player in either of
the singles semifinals for the
first time in 35 years.
The only U.S. hopes remain
ing were in the doubles, and
even there prospects were not
too bright.
Buchholz and his St. Louis
buddy Chuck McKinley, were
forced to pull out of the men's
doubles because of Earl's
severe ankle injury, leaving
a pick-up team of Mackay
and Ron Holmberg of Brook
lyn to carry on alone for the
Yanks.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Jackson County:
Summertime driving it fun for the whole familyl It's time for vacations and
relaxation . . . for driving through the mountains and to the seashore . . . for
family picnics and summer sports. These are the warm, full days of sunshine
and enjoyment. Now is the time to travel new highways, visit new places,
and do the many summertime things Americans love to dol
Unfortunately, a split second of driver carelessness or inattention at the
wheel can mar these summertime pleasures. Inattention to the safe driving
condition of the family car may also contribute to unnecessary delays or ac
cidents. May we suggest you discuss a few travel suggestions at your family dinner
table tonight? Then, pass them along to your motoring friends.
BE ALERT driving is a full time job.
MAKE COURTESY YOUR CODE OF THE ROAD - it takes only a moment.
TAKE A BREAK pull off the road and relax . . . drive refreshed.
ALLOW FOR EMERGENCIES - adjust your driving to road, traffic,
and weather conditions.
FOLLOW THE RULES OF THE ROAD - signs, signals, and road markings
are your guides to a safe trip.
CHECK YOUR CAR be sure it is in top condition for summer driving.
Have a safe, pleasant summer season and do come back!
Cordially yours,
o
