The Coast Guard said the vessel sank quickly after an ebb tide apparently forced ihe craft Into buoy No. 14 lo cated between the Pt. Adams Coast Guard station and the entrance to the river. D. E. Heart "attacks" and cerebral "strokes" take place in hardened arteries. Worked 10 Years Israel has just published for the profession, through the Vascular Research Founda tion, the results of 10 years of prescribing thyroid hor mone in large doses on a continuous basis. That is a radical departure from usual medical practice. He worked with 714 pa tients ranging from under 20 sion by a 10-power East-West committee at Geneva. The thyroid is one of the endocrine glands which se crete hormones into the blood stream that among other things keep check on the chemical processes which en ergize the body and keep it in repair. These hormones are aided in their labors by vita mins and enzynes. Particularly Potent Thyroid hormone is partic ularly potent in oxygen-involving chemical processes which utilize and dispose of fatty alcohols of which chol esterol is the most notorious since it is found deposited in the linings of all hardened arteries. REELECT PREXY Hollywood -0IPD-B. B. Ka hane has been reelected presi dent of the Academy of Mo tion Picture Arts and Sci e n c e s, it was announced Thursday. Hayes, a Chrysler engineer who. drove the car, said only a few motorists ap peared shocked when they no ticed the right front wheel was missing. "A few yelled 'hey, your front wheel is missing,' but most of them seemed to sense that we knew the wheel was gone and merely smiled," Hayes said. The Chrysler engineers loaded nearly 2,000 pounds of sand bags into the trunk of the car to counter-balance the lack of support normally given by the wheel. Permission Given The engineers obtained ad vance permission from traf fic authorities along the route to enable them to conduct the test. Purpose of the run, accord ing to Chrysler Division Gen eral Manager C. E. Briggs, was to test and demonstrate the rigidity and "tightness" of unitized body construc tion, adopted by Chrysler for its 1960 models. The engineers wanted to prove that a unitized body was rigid enough to support the right front end of the car even when the wheel was missing Hayes said he encountered no serious difficulties in driv ing the three-wheeled car but added he would not recom mend that motorists try to match the test. "First of all, you have to have that weight in the trunk to keep the car balanced," he said. "That makes the front end light and causes over steering which can be diffi cult to handle if you're not used to it. Stops No Trouble Hayes said there was a slight difference in the han dling of the car when turn ing to the right and left but he said the engineers had no trouble with sudden stops. "The weight in the trunk kept the front end up where it is supposed to be all dur ing the trip," he said. "On the highways we drove care fully, averaging about 45 miles an hour, so we didn't have to test any panic stops." Hayes said most motorists drove past the test car and then spotted the open wheel housing. "Most of them would then slow up to get a second look," he said. "They all seemed ex tremely interested, surprised and amazed. But only a few of them showed shock, horror or dismay. "Most first looked puzzled FRIDAY. JUNE 24, 1960 and then smiled.
