& WEDNESDAY. JUNE 22. 1J MEDFORD. MAIL TItlBUNC, MEDFORD, OBt. J v. 1 ! Report on Lumber Situation Indicates Ike's Popularity By A. ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Washington Correspondent Washington - The Com merce Department has issued a report on the lumber de- lJtV! mand and sup- I ji'v b,m P i y situation 9 . afi with c om r"ttm4 "leadine lum- which serves to illustrate why President Else nhower retains much popularity. Rom Smith The report notes that lum bermen "experienced a re duced demand for their prod ucts during the first quarter of 1960" while "generally fa vorable operating conditions in the west helped in main taining a substantial overall volume of production." Production, in fact, was 5 per cent higher than the pre vious year. But consumption fell off 3.4 per cent frm the first quarter of 1959. The big cause of this drop In consumption, the report noted, was the fact that home construction fell off 18.1 per cent. ,"Thus far, more favorable spring weather plus the re ported moderate improvement in the availability of mort gage money have not been re flected in any significant up turn in housing statistics," said the Commerce Depart ment. "However, some ob servers expect an improve ment in the Homebuilding rate later this year which would result in the start of about 1,200,000 (housing) units for the year" - compared with 1, 401,000 units in 1959. 'Notable Comments' Under the heading "notable comments," the Commerce Department ran the remarks of leading lumbermen who were not identified. The most interesting comment was this one: "It seems to me that the question of whether there is going to be an overproduction of softwood lumber this sum mer with a consequent de clining price is the most sig nificant factor. "While mortgage money is expensive, it is becoming more readily available. There is the danger that politics may enter into the picture, but there is every evidence that the Presi dent intends, to prevent this if lie can and that he will not hesitate to veto measures which would increase the availability of credit for building which he does not consider necessary." This western lumberman, obviously, is confident Presi dent Eisenhower will do what ever is right and necessary to prevent "politics" from enter ing the picture. Politics, to this businessman, is some thing great men rise above, something little men indulge in for partisan gain, some thing the President will pro tect the country from. The politics he refers to probably covers the efforts in Congress by some Democrats to enact a new housing bill which would broaden the cov 3 For Free Pickup and Delivery or Work Per formed tn Your Home SEARS I A ,' PHONE NOW '" SP 3-6661 1 FREE ) erage of the government's FHA-mortgage insurance pro gram. Homing Bill Passed The Senate last week pass ed an omnibus housing bill, which will provide more mortgage credit through gov e r n m e n t housing agencies. The possibility of a veto is strong. The House Banking Committee has approved a different version, which among Its features would make housing easier to buy through lengthening the maxi mum mortgage period from 30 to 35 years and eliminating anv down navmpnt nvmiro. Iment on the first $13,000 of the cost of a new home. Generally, lumbermen whn submitted comments were cheerful in their outlook for the rest of 1960. One comment was this: 'While the nnncnmnflnn lumber is housing will prob ably be well under that of 1959. the use in all other tvnes of construction as a group should increase. Consumption for non - construction uses should increase and . . . total consumption for this year should not be far from that of 1959."
