MONDAY, JUNE 6. 19, MTBTOTO WML TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, Hv Washington Report By WILLIAM S. WHITE 11 William 8. While States been PURPOSE IN TRAVEL Washington - Hard, prac tical Presidential travel for thoroughly planned, concjete and quite limited objectives, yes. But no more vaguely nopeiui jet liner trips for 'if "ti u n d e f i n ed "good will" objectives so 8 h immerling ly lofty as to be neither clear nor attainable. Thus ha the foreign policy of the United turned right' about in the wake of the summit confer ence that never was. President Eisenhower's forthcoming 23,000 -mile mission to the orient signals more than a shift in the focus of Washington's concern from West to East. It will be for other reasons a vastly differ ent mission from the one he took late last year. Then, he paid calls to countries in all sorts of categories - pro-Western, basically anti-Wea.ern, and Neutralist. fTHIS time, the President is - going to see Allied peoples only - and this time he goes in a far different mood than tile mood in which he went before. This time, he has specific aims which are open to specific and measurable accomplishment. Here are the main points in the hew itin erary, where in each case there is no doubt whatever as to just what the President hopes to achieve: Japan - (1.) To strengthen a pro-Western regime which is under heavy attack from angry home minorities for having negotiated the new security treaty with the Uni ted States. (2). To show in the clearest way that United States will not let down a Japan which is now being threatened with Soviet rock ets if it permits Japan-based American aircraft to "violate Soviet air space." Republic of Korea - (1). To demonstrate American inter est in an orderly transfer of command from the old re gime of Syngman Rhee to the new. (2) To make it wholly plain to the communists in North Korea that they would be unwise to attempt another invasion of South Korea. THE Philippines - To try to ease several real and easily visible sources of friction be tween that Republic and the United States. Formosa (Taiwan) - (1). To give this island home of the Nationalist Chinese govern ment a direct pledge of con tinued American support. (2.) To "show the flag" in the strongest possible manner -through the President's per sonal presence - against new menaces being offered by Communist China. This new journey has hopes Incomparably smaller than had the last Presidential journey afar. Then it was somehow supposed that great things for general peace - of a nature not ever quite brought down to earth - could somehow be obtained. Now it is wholly clear that no such grand and sweeping solutions are in sight. No self-delusion now lies upon the scene. A ND it may even turn out that this modest approach will produce moderate gains to offset, in a tiny but real way, the immoderate losses that followed upon our own Immoderate hopes for that last series of great visita tions which was to wind through a resplendent sum mit meeting and to end in a Presidential visit to Moscow itself. Inquiry among the people here who ought to know shows them divided as to whether the Communists are preparing big or only small trouble in the orient. One re sponsible view is that a gen uine outbreak may be expec ted, probably not in the small off-shore islands around For mosa but more likely in what used to be French Indo china until Communist in filtrators cut it to bits. Another view, and one no less responsible, is that the Asian Communists intend not actual war action but only a series of alarms and harass ments to throw the West fur ther off balance while it tries to recover from the shock of the lost summit. Whichever view is right, it is entirely relevant to the President's new journey abroad. (Copyright, 1960, By United Feature Syndicate, Inc.) Assigned to the Days Creek church is Miss Alice May Woollcy, who was assign ed to the Canyonville church in 1958 after serving the Tal ent church for a number of years. The Rev. He was ordained by Bishop A. Raymond Grant in Friday evening services. Approved for ordination to Deacons Orders by the con ference was the Rev. Robert Dowrey, assistant pastor of First Methodist church, Med ford. This is the first level of ordination in the church. Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF ; THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE, Hitler's last big gamble in World War II, was touch and go for days before American soldiers, many of them seeing action for the first time, finally sent the Nazi troops reeling back in disorder. While the battle was raging, how ever, both sides were hopelessly confused, with no such thing as a front or a rear in the tactical bedlam. Fog, snow and freezing temperatures added to the disorder, and so did German spies dressed in American uni forms. John Toland tells the whole story of this crucial encounter in his fine book, Battle. He writes, "It reached a point when passwords had to be supplemented with quizzes. General Omar Bradley himself was tested by being asked to name the capital of Illinois and Betty Grable's husband. He flunked the last question cold, but the sentry let him pass after indulgently supplying the answer, "Harry James, Sir." But for many seg ments of the i n d ustry it's profitless p r o s p e rity. Cost s have r 1 s en faster than profits, Elmer Walter and it's diffi cult to raise prices. The industry, trying to do something about the difficul ty, is planning carving. One section of the indus-i try that is apparently immune to the profit squeeze is the publication of encyclopedias where profit margins usually are higher than in other types of books. This phase of publishing plus reference books looks for a $200 million year in 1960. That's a record for the group and it -contrasts with a mere $89 million a decade ago The American Textbook Publishing Association esti mates that sales of all school texts wil lbe around $500 mil lion tnis year, also a new record high. Sales of all books are ex pected to reach a new top at $1.3 billion. Moshe Sachs, editor and publisher of the Worldmark Encyclopedia of the nations, states the case for encyclo pedias. American parents' insis tence on their offspring hav ing the best education pos sible is helping spark a boom in encyclopedia and reference book sales, he says "Pressures on youngsters to enter and graduate from col lege have never been more intense," he says. Howard F. - I am a bache lor of 27. I've been going out with the sme girl for nearly seven ytar. I've dated others, but I've been really in love with Sharon ever since I met her. The problem is that she is interested in a singing career and feels she can't settle down to marriage until she has won some success. Well, I say seven years is an awfully long time to keep after one tiling and not be uble to prove your self at it. If she had what it takes she would have achiev ed something by now. I'm sure Sharon will even tually face up to herself and then she'll be glad to have me to turn to. My friends think I'm a fool and keep trying to get me to meet other girls, but I guess 1 m a one-woman man. ... Don P. - This whole thing has gotten awfully silly. How ard was saying six years ago he expects to get married very soon. In the meantime most of the guys in our group have married and are raising fami lies and he's still on the loose and uninterested in some of the nicest girls. We all feel Sharon is play ing Howard for a sucker. She dates him when she hasn't anything better to do. She has told him in so many words that he's too dull and stodgy for her. She's interested in leading a glamorous, exciting life. If Sharon ever gets any where with her career, she'll drop Howard like a hot cake. Why should a good - looking, Intelligent guy spend his best years cour'ing a girl who would only take him as a last resort? The Council: Howard sees something absurd in Sharon's seven-year apparently hope less pursuit of one goal, but fails to notice that he is doing the same thing. It just shows how unobjective people can be about themselves! Just as Howard has fixed on Sharon as his one possi bility of real happiness, she has fixed on a glamorous, theatrical career as her one real chance. The trouble with these rigid goals that fall to ma terialize is that they are usual ly founded on a false basis, Those who want to marry marry. Those who want sing, sing. Those who want I'm a one-1 after year do exactly that. Of course, we can't all achieve our biggest dreams. But individuals who don't seek frustration or who aren't running away from something usually manage to incorporate something of their dream in real life. Sharon may not be able to make the Metropoli tan opera or be a top record ing vocalist, but if she has a voice and has worked hard, she can find ninny opportuni ties to be heard and admired on a more modest level. How ard may not bo able to win the lovely Sharon, but lie may Washlngton-flJPD-The Soviet Embassy has advised the fa ther of Francis G. Powers, pilot of the American spy plane downed in Russia, that it is ready to grant him a visa to visit his son just as soon as he submits an applica tion and his passport. be able to find equally desir able girls and settle down to wedded bliss. We think it would be most unfortunate if Sharon were to finally accept Howard in a mood of hopelessness and defeat. He will never feel he has been chosen for himself and she will always feel life hasn't lived up to her expec tations - hardly a sound basis for marriage. (Copyright 1960. General Features Corp.)
