MAIL TRIBUNE, Medfoid, Or. 1 Thursday, June 2, 1960 A Heai Status Of Presidential Hopefuls Noted Chicago - IUPI) - The current health stJgj of Vice' Presi dent Nixor. and Democratic Senators John Kennedy, Lyn don Johnson and Stuart Sy mington has been reviewed by an American Medical as sociation publication. The publication, "Today's Health," discussed the four men's physical condition in an article written by Ernest 10 ai ueua, vvasuuiKiun Bureau manager for United Press In wnational. Barcella said Congress was "a vast pressure cooker, where members . . . are ex posed to great stresses and strains, to a pace that would erode the staminaOf a rugged athlete." Even Greater Strain He said those who sought the U.S. presidency subjected themselves to an even greater strain, and it was in this vein that Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson and Symington were discuss ed. About the four, Barcella wrote: -NixQ "considers himself In 'very good health' except for an occasional attack of hay fever, and has held his weight at 170 pounds by care fully watching his diet." -Kennedy's "principal form of exercise is being on the move. Summers he golfs in the low 80's, swims, sails at Cape Cod. He keeps a golf club in his office. When he feels the need to 'unwind,' he swings it casually. He's a milk drinker, relaxes occas ionally with a cigar but has never smoked cigarettes." Learned Health Lesson -Johnson is the "go-go man of the Senate" who learned his lesson abo)the need for good health in 1955, when he had surgery for removal of a kidney stone and then i mod erately severe heart attack. He now gets seven to eight hours sleep nightly, eats regu lar but light meals and has regular physicalcheckups. -Symington has been in general good health except for surgery to help correct high blood pressure in 1947. "He undergoes a complete physical twice a year. A star lacrosse and tennis player in his Yale days, he still main tains a keen and active in terest in sports.
