Preliminary hearing for the three men, including one offi cer, all of Boise, was set for 10 a.m. Tuesday. They were identified as Donald L. Newbill, 26; Roger L. Smith, 24, and Charles F. Barnes, 26. They were placed in the custody of Col. Martin J. Johnson, commander of the Guard's 124th fighter group, pending their court appear ance. Oregon State Police Sgt. Russell Haynes said Newbill is a lieutenant in the guard and Smith and Barnes are both sergeants. Haynes said the trailer was found at Gowen field at Boise. He said it had been "remod eled" into a mobile canteen and that a hole was cut in the side. Take a darkly curtained stage with three pools of tight revealing a single chair, a small bench with a little harp on it, and at the back a de sign of heavy ropes and steel rods suggesting sail rigging. Add one man, and if that man s Philip Hanson presenting Moby Dick" the audience is assured a dramatic treat. It seems well nigh impossi ble that one individual, how ever gifted, could even begin to convey the power and emo tional depth of the great Her man Melville novel m less than two hours. But Hanson does this-even the doubting ones in the audience last night at Southern Oregon college's Churchill hail auditorium con ceded at the close of the per formance that he had suc ceeded. Hanson, the mood estab lished by the lights and almost bare stage, opens his story with a relaxed prologue just long enough to aliow the audi ence to settle in. ihen scene by scene, he outlines the story, sketches m the charac ters and builds up to the ten sion-filled climax. The actor's transitions from one character to the next seem natural. There is humor enough to relieve the stark weight of some passages, and the actor eases the whole by singing sea chanteys, playing xn accompaniment on the lit tle harp. But Hanson does not allow his audience to forget the epic hunt for the killer whale, or the cloud of fate which hangs over the ship and crew. His rich, expressive voice painted the picture and brought the story to a powerful ending. The audience, which seldom surrea tnrougnout the oer- tormance, applauded at length and its members sat, unmoving for a time even af ter the dark-elothed actor had left the stage for the last time. One wonders if his slight body can withstand the great effort which he expends during his one-man snow. The SOC Players sponsored last night's performance, and this reviewer believes that at some later date it should be repeated. Hanson left immediately after last night's program for Sart Francisco where he is giv ing "Moby Dick" tonight and Saturday night. O.S.
