Ljuth Salem expects to have its stiffest compeition provided by Medford, with nine qualifying spots, and Jefferson, with seven. Mel Renfro Standout The meet's outstanding th-, lete figures to be Jefferson's j Mel Renfro, who has posted the state's best times In the high and low hurdles events as well as holding the top broad jump mark this season by an Oregon prepper. Ren fro will be competing in all three of these events at the state meet. One of the meet's top races will match milers Steinke and Springfield's Fred Dellinger of Springfield. In their last race this year, Dellinger beat Steinke. Dave Carter, high jump. Medford tutor Dean Benson' and Crater Coach Ed Knapp were to have left at noon to day with their crews. Phoe nix mentor Hap Consbruck will take his team to Corvallis tomorrow morning. The Black Tornado of Med ford will have an eight-man squad at the A-l meet, includ ing Walt Ayres, hurdler who will go as a relay alternate. Ayres drew praise for his run ning in the district meet de spile an ailing back. He placed third in the high hurd les. Pirates Gain Spots Crater qualified four men for the A-l state rivalry. Phoenix will have seven men in the A-2 meet qualified for 1 1 berts. The Pirates gain ed nine berths in state as the result of the district meet but got two more when Ken Wat son, Myrtle Creek, and Doug Stewart, Rogue River, with drew from the broad jump and discus, respectively. Dan Lumley of the Pirates will be in the jump and Ron Baker in the discus. The two Phoenix men were third in district in the events. Lum ley will be the Phoenix heavy duty man with entry in both dash and the relay as well as the jump. Despite wire service re ports. Grants Pass, with men qualified for 10 spots, is ex pected to make the strongest bid from southern Oregon for A-l honors.
