These methods arc based nn comparing the apparent brightness of stars in the as tronomically 'close' galaxies with the brightness of the same kind of stars in the Milky Way. Distances in the universe are then determined from measurements of distances of these nearby galaxies. How ever, Ur. 1 lodge reported in the current Pjrilish scientific journal, detailed examination of the light from certain ob jects in the Magellanic Clouds shows that brightness eompar isons should not be used as an index of distance. Dirk sen said that "to curtail this program would be lo retreat" and thereby lose one asset from the "Ashes of the sum mit fatlurc"-a belief that the United Stales will stand firm. Nixon was described as making a "major effort' to back Eisenhower in pushing the aid program through con gress. Nixon's letter to the GOP members dated last Thursday, the day before Eisenhower re turned from the Ill-fated Paris conference.
