MAILTWIl'Vf, Hmtvi, Or. Thuriay, May 2. 1960 Forest Pavilion Turned Over to P-l Foundation Portland - Oregon's two leading industries, forest prod ucts and agriculture, joined hands recently when the swept -wing Forest Products Centennial Pavilion was turn ed over to the Pacific Inter national Junior Dormitory Foundation in ceremonies at the P-I grounds here. The 24,000 square foot open structure is comprised of seven hyperbolic-paraboloids, each 50 feet square, separated from each other by 5 foot wide plastic skylights. Most unusual feature of the Pavilion is that it is construct ed of wooden 1 by (i s secured to each other with staples. Lamination of the shells was done in position high above the ground through use of forms of shoring. Use Undecided The P-I Junior Dormitory Foundation has not decided the exact use which will be made of the futuristic Pavil ion. They have indicated, however, some plans to en close the space and make it into a general meeting area, following some tentative plans which Pavilion architect John Storrs has, which will maintain t h c architectural beauty of the structure as a show place for the striking use of forest products. Basic responsibility of the P-I Junior Dormitory Founda tion is to provide facilities and look after the interests of both 4-H and Future Farmers of America organizations throughcut Oregon, Washing ton, and Idaho, all partici pants in the annual P-I show each October in Portland. Last year the Forest Prod ucts Centennial committee raised and spent a quarter of million dollars In the con struction and promotion of the Pavilion and of Oregon's for est products in general. Jefferson Council Election Voided Jefferson, Ore. -HIPD- Three Jefferson city council mem bers thought they won elec tion in Friday's election and so did the voters, but the city attorney said differently Wednesday. Attorney Dale Crablree cited a city ordinance requir ing the officials to get two thirds of the total vote and none of the three C. D. Per son, Arlie Cooper and Roy Wickersham did. There will be another elec tion in November. Flower Rug BJtPllJ PT mk Peanut Butter ,..-11 Hot log Suns mvmm i Henz Re sh raarsnma rows Now's the time to enjoy outdoor eating . . . Mtdfgrd, Or. 7 ThunJiy, My li, 1960 B I Schweitzer Sees I Need for New African Leaders Paris - l?t Dr. Albert Schweitzer, sorrowing over the racial strife in South Africa, believes that solution of the problem there requires the emergence of "great" new leaders - both white and black. The 85 - year - old Nobel Peace Prize winner, philoso pher, musician and medical missionary stated his views in a letter received from him to day by United Press Inter national In Paris. The letter, dated May 10, was handwritten in blue ink and mailed from his Jungle hospital at Lambarene in former French Equatorial Africa. It was in reply to a cabled invitation from UP1 last month inviting Schweitz er to give his views on the South African segregation policy troubles. Schweitzer declined to give any detailed expression of views on the South African problem, saying: "I think that judgments pronounced abroad do not help things advance, but com plicate them." Delay Explained But he did say: "What would be necessary in South Africa is that a great white personality and a great black personality should emerge who, together, would create a new spirit in which a solution might be found and agreed to. Otherwise peace cannot be established." Schweitzer asked that he be excused for not having more to say publicly and for not replying to the cabled ques tionnaire more promptly. He explained the delay, in his one page personally signed letter, in these words: "I am writing to you very late because these last weeks have imposed on me in my hospital a load of work that has not permitted me to keep up with my correspondence as I would have wanted to." And in a thoughtful ges ture, he added: "I am returning the prepaid (cable) reply receipt so that you can recover the sum you paid to the post office." The receipt was enclosed.
