I Creature Inhabit Eirth In Series of Levels The world of living crea tures appears to occur in lay ers, or a series of levels, like the slices in a loaf of bread set upright. It's on the actual earth's surface where the crowd is, and here exists the highly competitive area where ail the pushing and shoving is taking place; here the strug gle for room is the keenest. The layers below and above this congested region are oc cupied by fewer, but more specialized, inhabitants. Most of these, however, have to depend on the floor-level-returning to It at least to rest, sleep, eat or raise their fam ilies. Even the strata of "above earth" animals such as the birds have various levels and heights above the surface at which their environment pref erence forces them to live. There are many feathered creatures that nest and feed right on the ground. The quail, meadow-lark, towhee and ground dove, to mention Talent Students Get Certificates Myrenda Balderson, Talent grade school pupil, won a cash prize and 12 other fellow pupils received certificates of merit in the 35th annual in ternational poster contest sponsored by the Latham Foundation for the Promotion of Humane Education with headquarters at Oakland, Calif. Talent pupils receiving cer tificates were Barbara Smith, Cherie Wright, Iris Ponder, Diane Sweet, James Davis, Sharon Mason, Jerry Cut- burth, Larry Lunsford, Beckie Williams, Linda Mul lin, Doc Daugherty, and Ron nie Crawford. More than 29,000 entries were received in the contest this year. They included b th students and profes sional artists from all parts of the United States and 22 foreign countries. The posters . re to portray kindness to animals and world friendship. Churchill, radioman second class. The Medford unit is leading the 27 other electronic divi sions comprising the 13th Na val district in both competi tion and board count. Cur rently, the largest in the dist rict, the local division was the only organized group in the four states of Montana. I Idaho, Washington and Ore- j gon to maintain over-strength status for a full year. a few, seldom go many feet above the earth s surface. Nesting higher, the hawks, eagles, ospreys and some of the others maintain their level. In between them and the ground there are a host of in-between species that pre fer the medium heights. Some bird species occupy the top level, along- with various species of insects, many of which seldom descend to the earth until they die. At that unfortunate time however, all of them, the great and the small, come to earth for the final phase. In the sub-floor lives yet another, and lower, layer of life; the real ground-dwelling insects, countless worms and burrowing mammals. Some birds go underground for family raising. In this layer there are creatures-some in sects and worms, ground moles and other forms of life -that never raise a single inch above their established level. Neither do they descend far below; they operate in a thin layer just below the earth's surface. Each species, once estab lished in a prescribed level, always remains in its position. Every cardinal in a county, a slate or a continent will build its nest about the same dis tance above the ground. Nesting-levels in nearly all bird species tend to remain con stant. Man's Level Above the sub-floor, and be low the tree-top level, right on the earth's surface, man himself is chained. His level is horizontal.- This surface level is where the greatest number walk,- run, wiggle, climb or crawl; all the bio mass that cannot fly or swim. Here is' the teeming multitude of the great and the small; all pushing and shoving one an other for elbow-room. Competition at ground-level is an ever throbbing pulse so powerful it shakes the entire structure of this living world. ! And here, head and shoulders above them all, walks man, ' dominant, powerful, and jeal ous of anything and every thing that challenges his posi tion. He does, at times, pid dle with other mediums-trying vainly to adjust to other levels - but he's earthbound whether he admits it or not. He aspires only temporarily to any verticle level. He may ascend In a plane, or down a little mine or the sea, but he must always come back to earth level. In the "life-layer" there are some perhaps that have not been classified, for in one level live the bacteria and the viruses, the lowest of all, but powerful enough at times to "level" even the greatest.
