H. Creager, the company'! manager said Friday. "Telephone users who order stationery, advertising matter or other printed supplies car rying their phone numbers should keep the change in mind," Creager pointed out. Many items of this kind are ordered months in advance of their actual use, he added, in explaining announcement of the number change at this time. Not only will all the num bers be changed, but also the prefix will be changed to "HU-2" instead of MUrdock 2, 5 and 9. As an example of what the new Ashland num bers will look like Creager gave "HU 2-1234." "The letters 'HU' have no particular meaning," Creager explained. "They simply rep resent the fourth and eighth holes on the telephone dial, and together with '2' give Ashland a code distinct from that of any other central of fice in the state of Oregon." Throughout the United States, telephone companies are gradually abandoning pre fix names on telephone num bers In favor of letter-number combinations like "HU-2" or in some areas all number codes like "482." Creager said telephone companies are adopting the new number systems because it became evident that they would eventually run out of names and numbers in some areas. Political Battle Erupts Over Summit, U2 Incident Washington - H'PD - A dis cordant political free-for-all erupted Saturday over the collapse of the summit con ference and the explosive Xj-i spy plan Incident which pre ceded it. The jarring controversy was triggered by Adlai E. Steven son's barbed criticism of President Eisenhower's hand ling of the situation. The twice-unsuccessful Democratic president candidate charged in a speech Thursday night that "incredible blunders" by Eisenhower had given Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev "the crowbar and the sledge hammer" to wreck the sum mit meeting. The Republican national commi.tee lashed back Satur day that Stevenson had fallen "like a ton of bricks for the Khrushchev line." In its pub lication, "Battle Line," the committee accused him of making i "rerkless speech" that injected the summit de velopment into this year's presidential campaign arena. "Compare Stevenson's wishy-washy 'let's not anger the Russians' position with that expressed by President Eisenhower and supported by reasonable men everywhere," the publication said. It auded: "All in all, Stev enson has contributed a disas trously divisive speech at a critical hour. He has tried to destroy American unity for personal, partisan political reasons." The Democratic advisory committee met in a closed session and agreed to issue a staterrnt on the summit rep ercussion Sunday. Democratic National Chairman Paul But- Cuba has thousands of off shore islands, the largest of which is the Isle of Pines. Butler said it meant that ar.ycr.5 who tried to discus; national issues was accused by Vice President Richard M. Nixon or his lieutenants of damaging national unity. Nixon Accused "We recognize the responsi bility of the opposition party to discuss policy and the lack of policy on the part of the administration, and this we in tend to do," Butler told re porters. He accused Nixon of using "confidential information from government files to at tract attention for his own political efforts." He said Eisenhower had handled himself well in the face of Khrushchev's "rude conduct" at Paris. But Butler said he believed administra tion foreign policy failures were becoming apparent and would get increased attention during the campaign.
