VFHY the break-up? " Well, the summit con ference situation had got around to the point where it didn't look to Mr. K. like he had much chance to wangle a propaganda victory out of it. So- If that was the case The thing for him to do was to break it up. He broke it up. You'll Find "MORE" of Everything In Downtown Medford TN RETROSPECT: I think perhaps we may have made a mistake in send ing a spy plane over Russian territory at the time we did it. As it turned out, it gave Mr. K. an excuse for doing something he needed to do anyway. But, if he needed to do it, he would have done it anyway. Still- We just might have NEED ED TO KNOW WHAT THE RUSSIANS WERE UP TO AT THAT PARTICULAR MOMENT. We must remem ber that the Kremlin wouldn't hesitate to pull a nuclear Pearl Harbor on us if it thought it could get away with it. TTINDSIGHT is wonderfully clear. We all know now what ought to have been done. But knowing it now and knowing it then are two different things. Statecraft is quite a job. Those of us not in the know are not in a good position to judge what should have been done because we don't know and can't know what the cir cumstances were at the mo ment. So let's not indulge in too much partisan defense of any body. Let's not Indulge in too much partisan praise of any body. Let's just remember that the decisions that were made involved at the moment when they were made a frightful weight of' responsi bility. - WHAT will come of it all? Let's consider at this point a statement made last night in Kansas City by Gen eral Alfred M. Gruenther, former Allied supreme com mander in Europe and now president of the American Red Cross. He told his hear ers at the Annual Red Cross convention: "The present crisis at the summit conference will pass, one way or another. What will not pass is the FUNDA MENTAL CONFLICT THAT STARTED IT ALL." WHAT is that fundamental conflict? COMMUNISM IS OUT TO CRUSH US, if it can, because as long as the U.S.A. remains strong and confident commu nism can't conquer the world. That's the long and the short of It. AT THE moment the situa tion looks pretty sticky. The only hopeful part of It is that as yet nobody has dropped a nuclear bomb.
