J. Frith of Australia s Wild life Survey Section has found. When breeding is finished and the water evaporates, the duck population moves else where. S. atiead in space ex ploration by maintaining a strong educational program to provide adequate numbers of scientists and engineers trained in applications of atomic energy to space. The AEC has done this successful iv for nianv vesrs in such fields as nuclear reactors, he reported. Few possibilities of the world today are as exciting as some of the peacetime uses of space Dr. Libby conclud- Drugs' Affect on White Cells Told New York, Science Service - Because several of the won der drugs, especially sulfa, can dangerously reduce the white blood cell counl, New York University's biological laboratories have developed a new simple technique to re veal such dangers in prospec tive drugs. The new method first ex poses rats to a sub-lethal dose of x-radiation. This dose reduces the white cell count. The drug is then given to some of the sensitized ani mals, while other exposed rats are kept as controls. If the drug does have the potential of reducing the white cell count, the blood of animals both injected and ra diated regains its normal count more slowly than the blood of the rats that under went radiation only. The technique was develop ed by Dr. Harry A. Charip per, head of NYU's all-university department of biology. Dr. Anna M. Slichcr, former graduate assistant in the de partment, and Dr. Edgar N. Y., Science Ser vice - Dairymen can save mil lions each year by feeding their catlle early-cut silage in stead of late-cut field-cured hay, two researchers here re port. New York state alone should have more than $50 million by using this kind of feed. Profs. S. T. Slack and Keith Kennedy of the New York Stale College of Agriculture at Cornell university found in three years of experiment that cows produce an average of 16 pounds more milk a day if fed the early-cut silage diet. Their experiments were carried out on purebred Hoi stein and Brown Swiss cows. Cows fed the early-cut silage gave sightly more than 50 ponds of milk a day. Those fed early-cut barn-dried hay produced 44 pounds and those on the late-cut field-cured hay died produced less than 35 pounds daily. Agricultural specialists are not sure wh the early-cut feed gives better results. However, they believe that the acids formed In the silaft as it de- t velops may aid the cow's di gestive processes and enable it to produce more milk.
