The Council reporti on problem! that have been dealt with by responsible agencies and counselors- Sharon H. -Mother tries to Dush me. Mr. M. H.-I'm only trying to help her. e Sharon R.-I am a single girl of 24. I am comidered lairly attractive and I dress well, but unfortunately 1 don't have much social life My mother is always try ing to push me into things and she causes me a lot of embarrassment. She always talks about me to her neigh bors, asking whether they know anyone I can go out with. Sometimes they have someone call me and we go out, but I feel you never meet anyone worthwhile that way. I have only one close girl friend and she doesn't go out much either. We both Joined a social club last fall, but we didn't meet anyone we liked. I would like to move away from this community because the people aren't very social-minded. Mrs. M. R.-Nobody can un derstand why Sharon has so much difficulty finding men friends. She is considered very pretty and quite smart. I feel she is just too shy and backward and I want to help her all I can. What Is the harm in asking friends and neighbors if they know any nice, suitable men? I met my own husband through an older woman whose store I used to patronize. She liked me and introduced me to the son of a friend of hers. We clicked Immediately. What was there to be embarrassed about? . Sharon keeps nagging about moving away from this com munity, but I don't think I'd want to do it even if it were practical. One place is as good as another. a The Council: People who feel they could be happier living in some other place or with some other family or marriage partner are looking for something that can only be found within themselves. They lack the spark that makes happy individuals love everything and everyone around them. We all get our share of good and bad things in life, but the Individual who con stantly stresses the bad has developed the habit of self torture,' and the one who (tresses the good has develop ed the habit of happiness. Both habits grow stronger with the years, so it is im portant to set the better pat tern at an early age. Sharon, like many individ uals of her type, has found a companion to share her habit of fault-finding. This can be the only reason two young women weren't able to find a single person they could like In a large social organ ization. Sharon shows clearly that he rejects most of the men he meets. Yet she feels re jected by them. This is why she is embarrassed when her mother seeks dates for her friae win not let her say she is afraid of one more re jection. It Is significant that many lonely girls shun blind dates, while popular ones wel come them. Sharon should try to step out of this circle of pride and shame. She needs to forget about her own feelings and learn to like both men and women. It is certainly true that one place Is as good as another as far as people are concerned. No community is without interesting, desirable human beings. When Sharon learns to like others, she will find them liking her and she'll look for ward to every opportunity to meet new people. Bug Smugglers Expected To Be Aclive in Summer Washington -d'PD- Tlie plant and animal quarantine inspec tors at the Agriculture De partment are expecting the usual run of bug smugglers, orange sneakers, and sausage slippers this summer. The inspectors know that several million Americans will be going abroad on holi day and business trips this year. They also know a rea sonable number of these tra velers will come home with forbidden agricultural pro ducts in their baggage. Inspectors on Guard The inspectors stand guard at ports to enforce a law which regulates the entry of all kinds of agricultural pro ducts. The law is there to keep out foreign bugs, plant and animal diseases, and other pests which could cause mil lions of dollars in damages if they slipped In. Take foot and mouth dis ease, for instance. We don't have it in the United States. If it did slip in and infect cattle it could cost taxpayers and farmers huge sums. Most returning travelers are warn ed against bringing meat pro ducts home because meats from some areas may be in fected with foot and mouth virus. Every now and then the in spectors run into a sausage slipper, trying to get a piece of his favorite delicacy home to Aunt Mabel. One traveler was nabbed last year trying to bring in meat sealed in a can of olive oil. Another turn ed up with contraband meat concealed in a pastry. Then there are the orange sneakers and bug smugglers who bring in insects living on plants. The border inspectors found one prize pair at Brownsville, Tex. A pasteboard box in their car was labeled "thermos bot tle. When inspectors open ed the thermos, they found it full of forbidden grapefruit and oranges. Then they took a closer look at the car. Items Destroyed They found fruit and plants In plastic bags, under the auto scats, inside a hat, in the trunk, in a suitcase, under some loose clothing, hidden under shoes, and in a cracker box. The forbidden itmes were destroyed. But that wasn't the strangest collection turn ed up. Two travlers coming home from Europe told in spectors In New York recently they had four oranges in their suitcase. "That's all?" the inspectors asked. "That's all," tha voyagers said. So the inspectors looked. They found: prickly pears, grape cuttings, tangerines, oranges, lemons, seven ears of corn, a ham, five pounds of sausage, two pounds of beans, and fig, citrus, and loquat plants.
