Two Women Honored By Association Two women who ara retir ing from positions with Med ford Public schools were hon ored at the annual banquet of the Medior,'. Grade Teachers association May 10. They ara Miss Louise Bas- ford, special education super visor, who has been with tha district for 32 years, and Mrs. Mary Coffin, a teacher at Lin coln school, who has 29 years' service. Elliott Becken, assistant su perintendent of schools, pre sented retirement avarda for outstanding educational serv ices to tha two women. William Brew, Lincoln school, was installed as asso ciation president; Robert Sage, Roosevelt school, vice president; Mrs. Hulda Fisher, Howard school, secrelary; and Mrs. Rebecca Long, Jackson ville, treasurer. Medford Lions Club Auxiliary Holds Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Event ilfrusa Club President-Elect The 25th anniversary of the chartering of the Medford Lions club auxiliary was ob served Wednesday evening in the Rogue room of the Med ford hotel. Fifty-three mem bers and guests attended. Although the club was or ganized in 1928, it was not chartered as a part of the Ore gon Lions club auxiliary un til 19.-f5. Mrs. H. T. Hubbard was Hie first president and Mrs. J. Vei 1 Shangle was the president at the time the club was chartered. Among those attending was Mrs. Lawrence PennirtRton, Redding, presi dent of local organization in 19:10 who was elected to the office of state president in 19.17. Guests for the evening were 10 of the 12 original founders. They were Mrs. Hubbard, Mrs. C. W. Reames, Mrs. R. A. Skinner, Mrs. H. W. Conger, Mrs. E. J. Leach, Mrs. R. W. Sleetcr, Mrs. F. G. Bunch, Mrs. Pennington, Mrs. Rich ard Mulholland, McMinville, Ore., and Mis. F. W. Scheffel. Past Presidents Fourteen of the 28 past presidents also attended. All were introduced by Mrs. Her bert Seil., immediate past Mrs. Whillock Returns Home Mri. Edith Whillock, 1003 West Main street, returned last week from California following a visit with her son and daughter and their fam ilies. On May 1 Mrs. Whillock attended a recital presented by pupils of her son, Charles A. Whillock. who Is on the staff of the Sherman and Clay School of Music In Sacra mento, Calif. The recital was held at the Hotel El Rancho and presen ted organ-piano students of Mr. Whillock and violin, gui tar and mandolin students of William B. Harris, another staff teacher. Mr. Whillock attended Med ford schools and has made his home In Sacramento for the past nine years. Later that week Mrs. Whil lock visited her daughter and son-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Crews, in Palo Alto, Calif. While there she atten ded an elementary band con cert In which her two grand sons participated. Young Joel played the clarinet and Robin the trumpet. About 83 pupils participated. Mr. Crews is a son of Mrs. Lucy Crews, 1003 West Tenth street, Medford. On Mother's Day the two families had dinner at Hie Crews home In Pnlo Alto. Tea to Honor Retiring Teacher Eagle Point Mrs. Hazel At kins, retiring teacher, will be honored with a tea at the home of Mrs. Ray Barrow on the Brownsboro road, Sunday, May 22. from 2 to 5 p.m. by the Eagle Point Grade School teachers. Faculty members, friends, and parents of Mrs. Atkins' pupils are invited to attend. Presbyterians Plan Spring Banquet Honoring Seniors The Presbyterian Senior High Youth Fellowship will present the Fourteenth An nual Spring banquet honoring graduating seniors Wednes day, May 18. In the Fellow ship hall of First Presbyterian church "The Madrigal" of Med ford High school, directed by Lynn bjolund, will sing sev eral numbers, both popular and sacred, for the program. Richard Lichti Is toastmaster. Senior recollections will be given by Miss Carol Slater, Miss Joyce Pearson, and Jim and John Lacy. Mrs Culy Leaves For Wedding Mrs. Gale Culy, 21 Wash ington street, is to leave Mon day for Bowling Green, Ky., where she will attend the wedding of her son, Stanly. En route east she will stop at Ogden, Utah, and Denver, Colo., where she is to partici pate in bowling tournaments. Also making the trip to the tournaments are Mrs. How ard Baker, Mrs. James Reln holtz and Mrs. Ken Clark, Medford, and Mrs., Wilma Winkler. Ashland. Mrs. Culy's son is to be married June 3 to Miss Lena Priestley, Montgomery, Ala. The young couple are students at Western Kentucky State college, and he Is to continue studies at Boston Theological seminary. Mr. Culy is a graduate of Medford High school and Wil lamette university. Before returning to Med ford. Mrs. Culy plans to stop in Corvallis for the gradua tion of another son. Douglas, from Oregon State college. Couple Tourino i Eastern States Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Cul len, 1098 Ross lane, have re turned to the east coast fol lowing an extended stay In Europe. T News Received Of Wedding News has been received here of the wedding last month of Mrs. Cecilia Werth, Lakeside, Ore., a former resi dent of Applegate, to George Swabb, Lakeside. They were married in Reedsport. Mr. Swabb is a retired rail road employee and the couple will reside at Lakeside. Mrs. Swabb Is the mother of Mrs. Earle Fichtner, Medford. Support Projects The mats support projects of t ' t local club, including international grants to aid women from South America and East Asia who are doing graduate work in this coun try. A founder's fund is used to retrain older women who must support their families Other projects concern safety geriatrics, Christmas charity and an annual S250 grant to a local older woman who needs schooling to gain em ployment The placemats advertise the Rogue valley as a good place to live and visit, and are sent throughout the country to other Altrusa members who make summer tours. Mrs. Precia Medley, social chairman, will be assisted by Mcsdames Mae Richardson, Mabel Sims, Bertha Haskins, and Frances Willctt. Medford Girl Receives Cap Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Kerr. 151 Perrydale avenue, were in Seattle late last month for the capping ceremony at St. Frances Xavier C a b r i n i School of Nursing. The Kerr's daughter, Judy, was one of 27 girls who were capped by the school director, Mother Josephine. MSC, and the student health director, Miss Mary MacGregor, RN. A reception followed at the hospital cafeteria. Miss Kerr, a 1959 graduate of Medford High school, was president of the Future Nurses of America at Medford High. Pacific college Selection is made on the basis of scholarship, character, and contribution to campus ac tivities. Miss Richards is a 1957 graduate of Crater High school. At Seattle Pacific she is a junior majoring in English.
