The jet flew 1,935 miles in three hours. 23 minutes and 49 seconds and at an average cround speed of 580 miles an hour. The dispute was settled here Wednesday by a Fed eral Conciliation Service -appointed arbiter, Sam Kagel. Kagel ruled that the "Ha waiian Citizen" will make sail with a crew of 48 men as contended by the Pacific Maritime Association una not the 51 as contended by the Seaman's union. The vessel will sail from Portland to San Francisco on Friday where it will take on cargo for Hawaii in the con tainer yards. It has been tied up as the result of the labor dispute since April 28. Allen Byrd, Lincoln, was elected president of the chap ter. Henderson has had 25 years service with the highway de partment, all at Eagle point. At the time of retirement, he was a foreman's helper. He plans a trip to Los Angeles to visit relatives then will re turn to his Eagle Point home. Fellow workers and OSEA members presented Hender son an electric drill for his workshop. Central Point Grangt An interesting program was presented for the Central Point Grange by (our Grange men at a meeting May 6. Charles Morehouse, John Neidermeyer, Edwin Geb hardt and Arnold Bolmert spoke on conditions that will confront the fanner in the future. Such things as popu lation increase, less produc tive land due to subdivisions, super highways, the need for more food products, less man power, more mechanism, more technical knowledge and less man hours, were discus sed. All members participated in group singing prior to the program. During the business session, reports were given by stand ing committees. Committee Chairman Mrs. O. T. Wilson announced the rules for the baking contest and urged the Grange ladies to enter. The next meeting of the club will be held Wednesday, May 25, at 1:30 p.m. at the ! home of Mrs. Chester Wendt on Old Stage rd. Each lady Is asked to take an item for the silent auction. Mrs. Homer Brown exhibit ed a bouquet of tulips in a ceramic vase. Mr. and Mrs. Dee Hcnd- rickson were elected by the Grange as alternate delegates to the state Grange conven tion. Peiping Warns on U.S. Air Missions Tokyo -(ITU- Peiping Radio said today Japan will have to take the consequences if U.S. planes based in this coun try fly intelligence missions over Red China. We issue a warning to the Premier Nobusuke (Kishi gov ernment) . . ." said a Peiping broadcast, quoting what it said was an editorial in the Communist Chinese "People's Daily." "It must bear full responsi bility for whatever conse quences follow if it continues to permit U.S. planes based in Japan to conduct spy activi ties against Red China." Ex-Polish Skipper Seeks Citizenship New York-NPD-The captain of the Polish liner Batory which carried stowaway Com munist leader Gerhardt Eisler out of this country has taken his first step toward becom ing an American citizen. Jan Cwiklinski, SB. the for mer skipper, now operates an ice cream business in Clifton, N.J. Cwiklinski, who command ed the Batory for seven and a half years jumped ship in England shortly after the bail jumping Eisler stowed away aboard his vessel to flee the United States. The captain came to this country in 1954 and was granted a permanent residence visa in 1955. Since then he has lived alone in a Manhat tan apartment. He wants next to bring his wife and two children from Communist Poland. County School Heads Set Meeting Salem-H'PD-The 1960 confer ence nf Oreenn county school superintendents ended here i Wednesday afternoon. About j 100 persons attended the i meeting. One of the last orders of business was discussion of a suggestion by Clackamas coun ty school superintendent Les Rood of the possibility of ex tending Jurisdiction of com munity college districts to take in 11th and 12th grade high school students for voca tional training, if high schools determine certain students' would benefit from such a pro- i gram. j A law was passed by the i 1959 Legislature providing for I establishment of the commu nity college districts. 1 io action was taken on , Rood s suggestion. Pensioners Found Slain atTacoma Tacoma -flJPD- Two elderly men, both pensioners and neighbors, were shot to death here Wednesday night. The victims were Ralph R. Loveland, 76, and Joseph James Taylor, 71. Each had been shot in the head. Loveland was found in a chair in the living room and Taylor was found dead in bed. Samuel Green discover ed the bodies about 4 p.m. Persons In the neighborhood said they saw the two men as late as 2 p.m. A .32 caliber Coll auto matic pistol, believed to be the death weapon, was found in the house. Robbery was be lieved to be the motive be hind the double slaying as one man j wallet was found empty and the other's was missing.
