J. - I am terribly concerned about my daughter Carol, who is 24 and engaged to a very fine young man. un fortunately she doesn't ap Dreciate her eood luck. A couple of years ago Carol was desperately In love with another boy who kept her on the string and finally married one of her best friends. We feared she would have breakdown, but fortunately Neal came along in the nick of time and saved the situ, atlon. Now Carol has begun to find fault with Neal for trivial things. She feels very shaky about the marriage, but I am sure there is no real reason for this. Neal is good looking dependable, makes a good liv ing, comes of a fine family and is kind and thoughtful. Carol won't find anyone as good. a Carol J. - I realize that all my mother says of Neal is true. Everyone likes him and thinks I'm lucky to get him and I guess I am. Yet I can't help comparing the feeling I have for him with the feeling I had for Bill and I know this doesn't measure up. It's true that Bill was never as kind and considerate as Neal Is and he isn't even as good looking or successful. Yet I know the feeling I ex perienced for him was so over whelming and intense it can't be compared to anything I feel for Neal. I know marriage with Neal couldn't be bad. It would probably be as happy as most, but I'm afraid I'll still think about Bill and that would be bad for both of us. a The Council: Although Neal is so desirable a young man the engagement is unfortunate since it was contracted on the rebound and is now being held together by pressure from without. Marriage requires a deep commitment of mind and feel ings. Satisfactory marriages cannot be made when they must be bolstered from the outside. Mrs. K. J. Isn't being really helpful to her daughter when she overpressures her. She is right to speak up in favor of a desirable mt-rlage, but she should make it clear that her responsibility must end there. Carol must consult her own mind and feelings before making the final decision and she can't do this when the outside clamor Is too great. Carol shows herself as rather undeveloped emotion ally. Her description of her feelings for BUI reveals only an Infatuation. Most human beings go through at least one such experience in a lifetime, but if they develop further emotionally they look back upon it with a rather skeptical eye - recognizing that they could hardly endure day-today existence with the object 'i of the Infatuation. When such a "love" stands between young man and woman and all future relationships, it is simply being used as a device to avoid mature love. Carol needs more time for growing up. President Eisenhower, In signing the four-year agree ment, called it by far the big gest surplus food deal ever made by the United States. One Load e Day An average of one shipload of wheat a day for ihe next four years will leave from th. United States for India to de liver the 587 million bushels of wheat and 22 million bags of rice sold under the agree ment. The first shipment will leave in July. Agriculture Secretary Ezra T. Benson said at the White House signing ceremony the wheat involved is "nearly equal to half an average U.S. wheat crop and is more wheat than we consume in the Unit ed States as food in an entire year. The volume of rice is substantially more than half an average U.S. rice crop and is substantially more rice than we consume as food In any one year." Par Mostly in Rupee India will pay $1,300,000,. 000 for it over a longer per iod. Some of the payment will be in American dollars, but most will be in Indian rupees. Part of the money will be loaned back to India for de velopment and other projects, under the provisions of Pub lic Law 480. Hotel in Taipei Oasis ol Plush Amidst Austerity Taipei, Formosa - fflPH - The Grand hotel, stopping place tor presidents ana kings, is an oasis oi piusn in a city of austerity. Built on the site of a Japan ese shinlo shrine, . Taipei's Grand hotel is Nationalist China's showplace hostelry for tourists with bfc names or fat wallets. The Shah of Iran slept there as did King Hussein of Jordan and President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam. President Carlos P. Garcia of the Philippines was the Grand's most recent distin guished visitor, stopping for five days with President Chiang Kai-Shek. Pavilion Reserved The hotel's entire Golden Dragon pavilion of 38 rooms, four suites, two dining rooms and a staircase cocktail lounge was reserved for President and Mrs. Garcia and their party. The cost was $488 per day. or $2,440 for their five-day stay. Built on a hill where Japan ese once worshipped their sun goddess, the Grand hotel com mands a sweeping view of Tal pai's ramshackle, grimy, soot stained houses and buildings. The front section was con structed in 1952. Two other sections - the Golden Drawn pavilion and the Jade Phoenix wing - were added later. A huge torii arch, final re minder that the hotel sprung from holy Japanese soil, waa torn down last year and re placed with a Chinese gate way. Western Style The Grand, air-conditioned and western style throughout, is decorated in rich Chines, reds and blacks.
