Chas; man. of County Unit of National Foundation Elected Mrs. Vangie Brain, Med ford, w .lectpt chairman of the Jackson county chapter of the National Foundation at the chapter's ann-.nl meet ing last week. Mrs. Brain replaces Mrs. Harold Gilbert who resigned. Other officers elected were Clarence Gossage, Medford, vice chairman; Mrs. Zoe Pe ters, Ashland, secretary, and Jack Moad, Medford, treas urer. It was announced thst Frank Morris, Medford, would be county chairman of the 1961 March of Dimes campaign. Morris headed the Medford campaign last Jan uary. Mrs. Brain announced that Trudy Ackerman and Mor ris will make up the chap ter's patient aid committee, and the finance committee will be composed of Jack Moad, chairman, Jerry Gasti neau and Harry Chipman. Pins Presented Foundation service pins will be presented to Mrs. Moore Hamilton and Mrs. Ma rie Ulrich, 26 years: Gastin ueau and Chipman, 15 years; Dr. Ralph Thompson, 10 years; Dr. William Miller, Mrs. Lew Miles and Mrs. Har ry Chipman, 5 years. Walker Larsen, Portland, state representative, congrat ulated the chapter on its Jan uary March of Dimes cam paign, putting particular em phasis on the Mothers' March. He pointed out that the coun ty's March organization is be ing held up as an example to other chapters in the west. Larsen said the National Foundation has undertaken an austerity program because of the decline in national March of Dimes receipts, say tag that, several- executive sec retary Jobs had been discon tinued, several state repre sentatives had been termin ated and other areas consol idated. He said he hoped the Jack son county chapter would be able to take on a full program in birth defects and rheuma toid arthritis, in addition to its polio program, during the . nex.t year. Shots Effective Dr. Miller, who recently re turned from., a regional meet ing of chapter medical ad visers in San Francisco, said the advisers were told that the Salk vaccine is 90 per cent effective in preventing paralytic polio with three shots, and becomes 95 per cent effective when four shots are given, properly spaced. He said that millions of people are still risking para lytic polio by not taking ad vantage of the vaccine. Oral polio vaccine, he said, has not yet been proven safe and ef fective. The doctors were told that chapters will start the birth defects and arthritis proeram as they can afford it, iie said. It was reported that the January March of Dimes cam paign grossed 516,724.22 in the county. Expenses were $827.88, leaving net receipts of $15,896.34. Of this amount. 50 per cent, or $7,948.17, went to National Foundation headquarters and an equal amount was retained for use in the county. Resisting Arrest Charged by Police Medford police arrested a 39-year-old man on charges of being drunk in public and resisting arrest early Friday morning and lodged him in the city jail. The man, William Ray Still well, 512 North Holly st., was allegedly observed walking in an unsteady manner on Holly st by a policeman on routine patrol, who asked . Stillwell his name. He allegedly re plied "John D. Rockefeller," and started leaving the scene. The policeman started fol lowing in a. patrol car, and Stillwell reportedly came to the driver's side of the police vehicle, opened the door, and slammed it hard enough to dislodge a piece of chrome strip from the side of the vehicle. Three officers responded to a request for assistance and Stillwell was informed he was under arrest. According to po lice reports, officers found it necessary to use force in or der to place Stillwell in a patrol car. Once at the police station, Stillwell again put up a strug gle, according to police, and this time he sustained a cut on his upper lip While police men were subduing him. He has been released on $112 bail, and is scheduled to appear in municipal court Monday. Klamath Fire Chief Dies of Heart Attack Klamath Falls - (DPD - Klam ath Falls Fire Chief Roy Rowe, 56, died here Friday night of a heart attack. Rowe was fire chief at Klamath Falls since 1949 and had been on the Klamath Falls fire department staff since 1936. He is survived by his widow, Ida, and three children.
