Walker Larsen, Portland,
state representative, congrat
ulated the chapter on its Jan
uary March of Dimes cam
paign, putting particular em
phasis on the Mothers' March.
He pointed out that the coun
ty's March organization is be
ing held up as an example
to other chapters in the west.
Larsen said the National
Foundation has undertaken
an austerity program because
of the decline in national
March of Dimes receipts, say
tag that, several- executive sec
retary Jobs had been discon
tinued, several state repre
sentatives had been termin
ated and other areas consol
idated. He said he hoped the Jack
son county chapter would be
able to take on a full program
in birth defects and rheuma
toid arthritis, in addition to
its polio program, during the
. nex.t year.
Shots Effective
Dr. Miller, who recently re
turned from., a regional meet
ing of chapter medical ad
visers in San Francisco, said
the advisers were told that
the Salk vaccine is 90 per
cent effective in preventing
paralytic polio with three
shots, and becomes 95 per
cent effective when four
shots are given, properly
spaced.
He said that millions of
people are still risking para
lytic polio by not taking ad
vantage of the vaccine. Oral
polio vaccine, he said, has not
yet been proven safe and ef
fective. The doctors were told that
chapters will start the birth
defects and arthritis proeram
as they can afford it, iie said.
It was reported that the
January March of Dimes cam
paign grossed 516,724.22 in
the county. Expenses were
$827.88, leaving net receipts
of $15,896.34. Of this amount.
50 per cent, or $7,948.17,
went to National Foundation
headquarters and an equal
amount was retained for use
in the county.

Resisting Arrest
Charged by Police
Medford police arrested a
39-year-old man on charges of
being drunk in public and
resisting arrest early Friday
morning and lodged him in
the city jail.
The man, William Ray Still
well, 512 North Holly st., was
allegedly observed walking in
an unsteady manner on Holly
st by a policeman on routine
patrol, who asked . Stillwell
his name. He allegedly re
plied "John D. Rockefeller,"
and started leaving the scene.
The policeman started fol
lowing in a. patrol car, and
Stillwell reportedly came to
the driver's side of the police
vehicle, opened the door, and
slammed it hard enough to
dislodge a piece of chrome
strip from the side of the
vehicle.
Three officers responded to
a request for assistance and
Stillwell was informed he was
under arrest. According to po
lice reports, officers found it
necessary to use force in or
der to place Stillwell in a
patrol car.
Once at the police station,
Stillwell again put up a strug
gle, according to police, and
this time he sustained a cut
on his upper lip While police
men were subduing him.
He has been released on
$112 bail, and is scheduled
to appear in municipal court
