Ashland-Noarly 2,500 hlgl school musicians are expectec to attend the Southern Ore gon Music Festival on the SOC campus this week end, Dr. Herbert Cecil, host chair man of the event has announ ced. The festival is sponsored by the Southern Oregon Music Educators association, and all performances are open to the Parker Lynching Attracts Tourists To Poplarville ; Poplarville, Miss-.-fllPJ-Sev-;ral white men got together '.one year ago, April 25, and ' committed a crime that touch ed off world-wide reaction. ! The crime - The lynching of negro Mack Charles ; Parker - is rarely mentioned : these days by local residents. : However, Poplarville's ef fort to forget is hindered daily by travelers from all parts of the nation who turn off U.S. Highway 11 and ; drive into town to ask ques- '. tions and view the site of the ' lynching. -Tourists See Lynchers J Many of the tourists, with- out realizing it, have seen j members of the lynch mob. The killers, whose identities are well known to local citi zens, still live in this area, where most of them do farm ; work So far, they have escaped 'punishment through failures of county and federal urand Juries to return indictment in the case. But ballots by the federal jury, which met in Biloxi, ' Miss., last January, almost had the majority necessary to Indict several of the suspects ; and the possibility that a fu ture grand jury may review . the case is enough to keep the killers worried. Evidence Gathered . Evidence against them was gathered by a force of up to 60 FBI agents who spent one 'month here after Parker, a ' 23-year-old truck driver, was ' dragged from his jail cell, where he was held pending trial on a charge of raping , a white woman. He was beat 'en, shot and tossed into the '. nearby Pearl river. c The FBI report on the lease, which is still considered "top secret," contains state- jments from three men that (they were involved in events connected with the lynching. jThe report lists 23 white men as "known and suspected participants in the abduction." I The report was turned over (to state authorities when the 5 FBI pulled out last May 25. ?A country grand Jury which, was expected to consider the C lynching ignored the matter j and, in its report, failed to Snote that a prisoner was miss ing from the county Jail. . The Justice Department jmade sure that the federal I grand jury, made up of South Mississippi men, would not ignore the case. ; About 50 witnesses were ; subpoenaed for a two-week tjury session but Jury mem Jbers cut the probe short, can celled appearances of 15 wit nesses and announced it could -find no federal violations in ;the case. ; U.S. Attorney General :Willlam P. Rogers said In a Jnews conference on Jan. 28 irhat the government still has Jthe fuse under consideration. ;At that time he described ;failure of the federal grand ;jury to return indictments as t "travesty of justice" and a Z"serious injustice." I Department civil rights ex ;perts still are studying the ;case with a view to making jfurther moves. Officially, all ;the department will say at 'this time is that it is still '"not a closed case." iCourf Records lASHI ANO MUNICIPAL COIWT - Mlldrfd I Batcheler, exptrrrl registration. SS.
