Auto Race Fever High In SO Area Auto race fever is spread ing through this area as the date for the iirst competition it Ashland speedway this sea ion approaches. May 21 is the opening date. Super-modified cars will in augurate the I960 slate with a reported $1,000 guaranteed purse at stake. High enthusiasm among both drivers and mechanics is reported. Garages of the area are said to be humming with activity as car owners gtrlve to have their vehicles ready for the races. They don't want the lions share of prize money to go, uncon tested, to out-of-town drivers. A newcomer to circular track racing will be Noel Black. He's a veteran of speed an high performance, how ever, with a lot of drag strip experience. Given a little ex perience, he's figured to be a driver to be reckoned with. Jones Readies New Car Black has teamed 'with an old hand at the game, Blair Crosby. They are building a high - powered Chrysler V-8 special. At Rogue Valley Muffler and Auto Repair here are sitting one car ready to run and another being readied. The new car will be skip pered by Johnny E. Jones, track champion at Crescent City, Calif., the past two sea sons and at Klamath Falls in 1959. He hoped to have it ready for trial in races this week end at Crescent 'City. The car has a Chevrolet chas sis and Chevrolet V-8 engine. The other auto, driven to victory by Jones both last year and the year before, will be chauffeured this season by Bob Jenkins. It has a Chev rolet body and chassis with Ford V-8 Interceptor engine. Board Approves Stadium Funds New York -IUPD- New York City's approval of a $442,500 appropriation for final plans and specifications to build a new stadium was hailed today "as the greatest step taken so far on behalf of the Continen tal league." Attorney William A. Shea, prime mover in the founda tion of the circuit, said New York's approval also paves the way for construction of new stadiums in Houston, Dallas Fort Worth and Atlanta. The Raiders open with a single game against the Vi kings tomorrow with lefty Marty Vogler scheduled to handle the pitching chores. Vogler has a 1-1 record with a win over the University of Nevada and a loss to Oregon college. Don Vanntce and John Younger will twirl the two seven inning games on Sat urday. The Vikings currently are riding in the OCC with a 4-1 record while the Raiders are third with a 2-2 mark. Jones In Lineup Bob Jones will be a new face in the Raider lineup. He has planted himself in right field. Jim Diet will still lead off and play shortstop but center fielder Eldon Francis will move to the second slot in the batting order and Jones will swing third. Catcher Phil Sword is fourth, leftfielder Jess Mun yon fifth, Kerm McLemore at third will bat sixth and first baseman Jack Brown will bat seventh with second sacker Chuck Nevi hitting eighth. - Next home action for the Raiders who are now 6-5 on the season will be May 6 and 7 in a three game series against Eastern Oregon col lege. Tuesday the Raiders will go to Klamath Falls for a single game against Oregon Tech. Duck Trackmen Face Cougars Eugene-OIPD-Oregon's track and field team faces Washing ton Stale here Saturday in a meet expected to produce an individual duel between Dave Edstrom of the Ducks and Spike Arlt of the Cougars. Edstrom edged Arlt in the high hurdles here last month but had to run the fastest of his career, 14. 1, to do so. Last week Arlt won the high hurdles shortly after finishing second in the 440 against Oregon State. Then he won the low hurdles and ran the anchor leg on the win ning relay team.
