Air Force Pushes Ahead With Plans To Produce Manned Space Craft Washington -UPD- The Air Force, pursuing its role as the future U.S. space force, rushed plans today for pro ducing a manned space craft with a wide variety of mili tary uses. Known as Dyna Soar, the space vehicle will combine the ballistic missile and the airplane in a maneuvcrable machine that can put man into orbit and let him land rou tinely on large air bases. The Air Force Wednesday announced the badly kept se cret that Boeing Airplane Co., Seattle, Wash., had been or dered to go ahead with "de sign and ground testing" look ing toward construction of ex perimental Dyna Soars. The Air Force space ship is a sharp departure from the Mercury Project of the Na tional Aeronautics and Space Administration. Mercury calls for rocketing a man into space in a capsule mounted on an Atlas missile. His reentry into the atmosphere would be con trolled from the ground and the capsule would be let down MEDFORDmWTRIBUNE Page 2A gently on a parachute. The Defense Department holds the Dyna Soar to be a research and development project. It shies away from discussing potential military uses. Experts consider, however, that the Dyna Soar may be able to perform these military roles in the late IBiiUs: -A reconnaissance ship load ed with photographic equip ment and infra-red sensing de vices to detect enemy missile launchings and other activi ties. -A satellite interceptor and satellite inspector. It could ex amine objects in space to see whether they were friend or foe, and could be armed tn neutralize or disarm enemy space vehicles. -As a pilotlcss vehicle, it could orbit the earth carry. ing bombs which could be dropped on command from earth stations. -It could be used as an Intercontinental guided mis sile, which would follow devious rather than predicta ble path to its target. The Dyna Soar project is expected to result in a flying machine by about mid-1964. The experimental version will be a winged glider, de signed to resist temperatures of 2,000 degrees on reenter ing the atmosphere. Samuel H. Mallicoat, depu ty director of Oregon's De partment of Planning and De velopment, said the state would underwrite the cost of the move to Wagontire in southeastern Oregon. In prepared testimony be fore a Senate armed services subcommittee, Mallicoat said the move will permit "order ly economic development of Oregon to its highest and best use." No Known Opposition He said there is no known opposition to the proposed transfer of the range from its present Columbia river basin site. Oregon wants to develop a space age industrial park at the Boardman range. The proposal was introduc ed by Oregon Democratic Sens. Wayne Morse and Hall Lusk as an amendment to the military construction bill. Mallicoat also trans mitted Gov. Mark Hatfield's request for favorable action. Robert Weir, representing the Lake county Chamber of Commerce, advised the com mittee he would submit a statement by Monday. Stock List Meets Mild Selling in Early Trading New York-IUPD-Stocks met mild selling in the early trading today with steels, oils and rails pacing the down turn. The list suffered its fifth consecutive setback Wednes day in the face of what bro kers considered the healthiest news background in weeks. Polaroid added nearly 3 in the cameras and Minneapolis- Honeywell nearly 4 in its sec tion. Steels favored a gener ally easier price trend. Lu kens dropped a point. Autos met some support with small gains appearing in Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. American was un changed, Du Pont firmed in the blue chips. Thiokol lost more than 1 in the chemicals, and IBM around 1 in the electronics. The Air Force expects to follow a cautious test pro gram similar to that planned for the Mercury Project. Some time this year, the first Mercury astronaut is ex pected to take a 200-mile ride down the Atlantic range, achieving a height of 100 miles. In 1961, plans call fur orbit ing the first astronaut. Boeing will build 11 Dyna Sor.rs. Three will be for ground tests, four for un manned flights and four fur piloted flights. In the first manned test, the glider will be boosted into the sky from Cape Canaveral, Fla., and fly at speeds slower than needed to go into orbit. Later the glider will be hurl ed into orbit, circling the glnhe at 18,000 miles an hour. Present plans called for the manned space ship to land on the California desert at Edwards Air Force Base. The Air Force did not say when the first manned flight .n.,l Uo nttpmnted But oth er sources indicated a sub orbital flight might take place by September, lab. Boeing was named contrac tor for the Air Force manned space program last Nov. 9. Since then the service and the industry have debated the merits of winged gliders as opposed to capsules like the Mercury vehicle. The go ahead to Boeing meant the Air Force had decided to stick with the glider concept.
