Sua Boa, Grants Pan, and Maynard Hadley. 4 Date Announced For Flower Show Phoenix - The date for the Phoenix Garden club flower how has been set for June 8. Mrs. W. A. Grochockl Is how chairman. The garden club held a suc cessful plant sale April 16 at Norton's Food market park ing lot, members reported. Mrs. Lester Carr has been elected president of the club for the coming year. Mrs. Chris Wolff is first vice-president; Mrs. Vaughn Quacken bush, second vice-president; Mrs. Charles Lewis, treasurer; and Mrs. Ronald Quacken bush, secretary. Committees will ba announ ced at the May 13 meeting. Soloists Told For Concert Soloists for the Pops U.S Hotel Benefit concert have been announced. They include Mrs. Sylvia DeVoss, Talent, coloratura so prano; Mrs. Sue Boe, Grants Pass, alto, and Maynard Had ley, bass. Tha soloists will sing selections from "Show Boat" and "Porgy and Bess.1 Th Philharmonic Orches tra of Southern Oregon under the direction of Richard D, Werner will present tha con cert. It is being given under the auspices of tha Siskiyou Pioneer Sites Foundation and will benefit the restoration fund of tha U.S. Hotel in Jack sonville. The concert will ba held Sunday, May 1, at 3 p.m. at the Medford High school au ditorium. Tickets are on sale at Pu ruker Music House, Barker's, and Swem's in Medford, and Foster Pharmacy in Jackson ville. Parents Attend Week End Event A number of parents of local students attending Lewis and Clark college are in Port land for the annual parents week end, April 22-24. Among those planning to make the trip north were Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Kllbourn, Cen tral Point, and Mr. and Mrs. George Flanagan and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Harrison, Med ford. John Flanagan is a fresh man majoring in science and Keith Harrison is a freshman In liberal arts. The KUbourns' daughter, Janet, Is also a freshman. Hus band, 1297 Morrow road, were honored April 10 at an open house at Girls Community club in celebration of their SOth wedding anniversary. Hosts for the gathering were Dr. and Mrs. E. A. One hundred and 35 guests attended from 3 to 5 o'clock. Music, Including hymns and old-time songs, was provided by a vocal trio of Mrs. Charles Champlin, Mrs. Melvln Hoov er and Otis Swisher, accompa nied by Mrs. George Maddox. Mrs. J. W. Thornton and Mrs. Kiesendahl served coffee from silver services loaned by Miss Elizabeth Burr and Mrs. Scott Davis. Mrs. Flossie Bar ber, Berkeley, Calif., was at the punch bowl. Mrs. Berle Thornton and Mrs. Earle Jossy cut and served the cake. At the guest book were Mrs. John Wub bels and Mrs. Ward Lampkln. Assisting about the room were the Misses Gay Briggs, Karen Jossy and Diane Kie sendahl. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. Evangeline L a y t o n, Berkeley, a cousin of Mr. Hus band, who accompanied Mrs. Barber, Mr. Husband's sister, to Medford for the occasion. ' Mr. and Mrs. Husband were married at Bellville, 111., April 12, 1910, and came to Cali fornia where they lived until moving to the valley In 1933. Their son, Robert S. Hus band, and his wife and small son were unable to attend. Valley Women Plan to Attend OSC Activity Over 1,800 mothers are ex pected to visit Oregon State college during Mothers week end April 29-30. Miss Karen J. Culbertson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas A. Culbertson Jr., 261S Hillcrest road, Is one of the students in charge of plans for the week end. She is a freshman in business and technology. Wek end events will In clude a style show presented by the school of home eco nomics, a water pageant, flower show, performances of the musical "Kismet," the an nual inter-fraternity sing com petition, dinner and firesides In living groups and other student activities. Mrs. Garner Couey, 1828 Stewart avenue, is president of tha Medford unit of the OSC Mothers club. Mrs. Charles Forest, Ashland, Is state president; Mrs. Elwood N. Stnnfleld, 33S8 Bussed road, Central Point, is a dis trict representative; and Mrs. John Carter, 111 Reddy ave nue, Is on the state scholar ship committee. Mrs. Garner, Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Forest will be among local women traveling to Corvallls for the event. Medford Ladies of Elks Install Two Chairmen Mrs. Bruce Blew and Mrs. Emil Unger were installed as co-chairmen of the Medford Ladies of Elks at a luncheon and card party held in the Elks club party room Tues day, April 19. Richard Phair, secretary of the Medford Elks lodge, intro duced Joe Hosick new exalted ruler, who welcomed the ladies and presented flowers to Mrs. Blew and Mrs. Unger on behalf of the lodge. Mr. Training Session Set in Phoenix Phoenix - Two training ses sions of Phoenix volunteer cmsaders for the American Cancer society will be held Tuesday, April 26, at Phoenix Community club. The first session will be from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and the second from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Volunteers may choose the session which is most con venient for them, those In charge state. Square Dancers Will Graduate A square dancer's gradu ating party will be held Mon day, evening, April 25, at the Medford YMCA. All square dancfrs are Invited. Dancing will be from 8 to It p.m. and Douglas Fosbury will call. A polluck supper will ba served. Jacksonville Woman Heads Zone Officers Ashland - Mrs. Ida Hen- nlng, Jacksonville, was elect ed president of St. Andrew's zone, southern Oregon of the Luthern Women's Missionary league, Tuesday. Women of the league held their annual rally at Grace Lutheran church, Ashland. The Rev. Friebert Krinke was the main speaker. His topic was "Ye Visited Me. Other officers elected for the - zone were Mrs. Ruth Braatz, Klamath Falls, vice- president; and Mrs. Louisa Jahnke, Central Point, secretary-treasurer. Mrs. Ed Guetz laff, Medford, retired as presi dent. Mrs. Mabel Johnson, Grants Pass, has served as secretary-treasurer the past year. The Rev. Mr. Krinke Is in stitutional missionary for the Northwest district of the Lutheran church, Missouri Synod, for the Portland area and is also chaplain of the Veteran's hospital, Portland. Rally Speaker Another rally speaker was Mrs. Walter Kahle, Forest Grove, president of the Ore gon district of the Lutheran Women's Missionary league. A turkey dinner was served at noon by the Ladies guild of Grace Lutheran church. The Rev. Albert Nlckode- mus, Grace Lutheran pastor, gave the opening devotion and the Rev. John Simon, St. Peter's Lutheran, Medford, conducted the closing devo tion. The Rev. N. E. Dey, Zlon Lutheran, Klamath Falls, in stalled the new officers. Grants Pass Girl Leaves for Tour Miss Adelle Gertrude Dav enport, 3180 Lower River road. Grants Pass, left the Medford ariport Friday eve ning for Washington, D.C. as one of the finalists in the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow program. Miss Davenport, Oregon winner, will compete with 50 other finalists in the $110,000 homemaking program spon sored by General Mills. The Ail-American Home- maker of Tomorrow, who will receive a $5,000 scholarship, will be announced Thursday, April 28, at a dinner In Wash ington, D.C. Her selection will be based on her original test score in a written knowledge and attitude test given all par ticipants last December and the decisions of judges from Science Research associates after interviews and personal observations during the tour. Miss Davenport will spend the week on an educational tour to New York City, Wil liamsburg, Va., and Washing ton, D.C. While at the capital they will visit with Mrs. Dwight D. Elsenhower at the White House. 1 Paulette Simmons Honored at Party Paulette Simmons, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Sim mons, 606 Valley View drive, was honored April 19 at a party celebrating her tenth birthday anniversary. Games were played and refreshments served. Mrs. Perkins! also received a past chair man's pin ' from the Elksl lodge as a token of appreci ation for her work as Ladiesl of Elks chairman. Mrs. C. Marlene of Rose burg, who accompanied Mrs, Perkins on her trip to Med ford Tuesday, was introduced to the group. She is a member of the Roseburg Ladies of Elks. Mrs. T.. K, Flynn and Mrs M. M. Herman were winners of prizes. New committees for the coming year include Mrs. A. J. Farra, cards; Mrs. Joe Hos ick, publicity; Mrs. Claud Hoover and Mrs. H. J. Boyd hospitality. Committees in charge of decorations and serving for Tuesday's party included Mrs Randolph, Mrs. Ross Gilkison, Mrs. Kenneth Thompson, Mrs Fred Rehling, Mrs. A. P. Col-I lins, Mrs. John Henson, Mrs Wayne Turpln, Mrs. H. J Boyd and Mrs. J. Murray. Dance Pupils Perform For Pythian Sisters Students of Miss Pat's Dance studio performed at a meeting of Talisman temple. Pythian Sisters, Tuesday eve ning. Mrs. Edward Bostwick, who presided, appointed as pro tem officers Mrs. George Thomas, past chief; Mrs. Har ry Bryant, secretary; Mrs. Harry Barneburg, guard; and Mrs. P. M. Aldredge, potec- tor. Mrs. Hayes was in charge of the ' birthday party for members who had April birthdays. Mrs. J. Cochran, finance chairman, announced that a plant and rummage sale will be held April 27 at the Fehl building. Members are to take donations to the building Tuesday between 7 and 9 pjn Mrs. Cochran will be host ess at a party Monday, May 9 at 8 P.m. at her home, 63 Bush street, Ashland. Members are invited to take guests. Members lo Help Members of the temple have been asked to help at the grand session of Sunshine Girls which will be held April 20-May 1 at the Med ford Pythian hall. Special help was asked for housing arrangements for Saturday night, April 30. ' Mrs. Harry Bryant was hostess at a coffee hour at her home, 1312 Reddy avenue, Wednesday. April 20. The Past Chief club of Pythian Sisters will meet at the home of Mrs. Don Ross, Ross lane, Tuesday, April 26 for a potluck luncheon at 1 p.m. t Forensic Group Pledges Student Lynn Hales, a sophomorel at Willamette university, re cently was elected to the na tlonal forensic honorary fra ternity, Tau Kappa Alpha. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J W. Taylor, 1548 South IvjH street, and a graduate or Mea ford High school. Membership in the group is reserved for students ofl high academic achievement who have distinguished them selves In two full yeara ofl varied collegiate speech ac tivity. Hales won high ratings! while speaking In debate, ex tempore, impromptu and dls-l cussion in tournaments in California, Washington, Utah and Oregon. The young Medford man and another Willamette stu dent, Charles Bush, were rated fifth out of 25 teams In the recent Tau Kappa Alpha national tournament at the University of Utah.
