Pointer Eighth Victor in Track Central Point Central Point Junior high eighth grade trackmen won 72 to 41 Friday over North .Grants Pass. North took the seventh grade part of the meet 94 to 23. The Pointers had three triple winners. One was Sherm Klger, a Gold Hill grader competing with the CP team. He took the 79 and 190 yard dashes and the broad jump. Vern Swanson was vic tor In the high hurdles, high Jump and 330-yard run and Darrell Summerfield won the Javelin, shot put and discuss with respective distances of 149 feet 9 inches, 47-9 and 109 feet, respectively. The Crusaders won 10 of the 12 events outright and tied for another first. SM swept the half-mile run and Yreka gained all three places in the shot put. Terry Cooper took both hurdle events for the Medford school and in the high jump tied with Gary Gresham of the Miners. THIS It TMftLMf- ,jiil:llrSr M GRANTS PASS 237 Hiway 99-S Week Days Dyrol Burleson Record in Mile Burleson, Edstrom Pace 87-44 Oregon Track Win Eugene (UPD University of Oregon's track team, with Sophomore Dyrol Burleson breaking the four-minute mile and versatile Dave Edstrom scoring 13 points, defeated Stanford University 87-44 in a dual track meet Saturday The 19-year-old Burleson won the mile in 3:58.6 to turn in the fastest mile time for an American citizen He outkicked Ernie Cunliffe of Stanford to win the event by about eight yards in a dual meet before 8,500 fans in cool, dry weather. Cunliffe was clocked In 4:00.4 and both times were well under the Olympic qualifying standard of 4:02. Cunliffe led during the first 3-V2 laps, but Burleson drew even on the last turn and won with a fresh surge of speed at the end. He never trailed by more than three yards throughout the race. Cunliffe Leads at Half The lap times were 62 sec onds for Cunliffe at the end of the first 440 yards, 2:02 at the half-mile with Cunliffe still leading, and 3:01 as the two runners went Into the final lap. Burleson was timed In 62.S seconds, 2:02.4 minutes, and 3:01.2 minutes for the first three laps. The only other American native to run a sub-four min ute mile was Don Bowden of the University of California, who was timed in 3:58.7 at Stockton, Calif., on June 1, 1957. It was Oregon's 37th dual meet victory in its last 38 starts. Hedrick Hornet Seventh, Eighth Cop Victories Hedrick Junior High school seventh and eighth grade tracksters triumphed in both division of a track meet with Ashland in the Lithia city on Friday. The Hornet eighth finished in front by 62V4 to 50V4 by winning eight clear firsts and tying for one other. In the seventh grade conflict, the Medford school won out by a lopsided 61 to 16 by nabbing first place points in eight events and knotting for first in the only other contest. Eight grade double winners for Hedrick were Richard Robertson in the discus and shot put and Jim Henry In the 75 and 330-yard races. Jeff Hiatt claimed the 660 for Hedrick and George Dames the pole vault. Doug Brown and Calvin Lenz tied in the high Jump and the relay team of Tom Owens, Walter Ver- strate, Lenz and Henry grab bed that event. Ashland Winners For Ashland Blair took the high hurdles and Trost the broad jump. A Llthian crew swept the javelin. Verstrate of Hedrick and Trost 01 Asn land tied in the 150 -yard sprint. Stephen Lemlre was victor In the dashes for a double win for the seventh grade Hornets. Charles Pryor was first in the 330 and tied for top honors with teammate Bill Foulon In the pole vault. Gary Smith won for the Medfordites In the hurdles and tied with Lively of Ashland in the high jump. Grade School Game Won by Lone Piners Lone Pine, with 11 runs In the first inning, clubbed Jack sonville 15 to 0 In an Ameri can league grade school base ball game played Friday. Randy Moyer had three hits for LP and drove In three runs. Bruce Moyer doubled twice and Steve Crider hom ered with two on base. Jacksonville got just two hits off the Lone Pine pitch ing. Burleson, of Cottage Grove, is a former National Inter scholastic mile record holder and also set a college fresh man record of 4:06.7 last year. He was national AAU 1500 meter record holder and champion last year, as well as winner in the 1500 meters in both the Russian and Pan American Games. It was. Norm Lloyd of Stanford was a bad third in a six-man field finishing in 4:28. He slowed down when he saw he as badly out of contention. Burleson's mark, while the best for an American, merely tied the University of Ore gon record. Jim Bailey of Australia, running for Ore gon in Los Angeles in 1956, ran a 3:58.6 mile when he defeated his veteran fellow Aussie, Herb Landy. Actually Cunliffe did all the work," Burleson said when he caught his 'breath. "He set a wonderful pace. I knew by the third lap it would be under four minutes. The front runner has a psy cological disadvantage. He's wondering what the others are going to do." Cunliffe said: "I knew it would be a great race. Burleson is a great one. This is only my 14th or 15th mile race I don't have much experience. I'm primarily a half-mllcr." Race at Eugene ipiHnr Medford Netters Win 6-1 Over Pelicans The Medford high school tennis team gained sole pos session of the Southern Ore gon conference lead by post ing a 6-1 win over the Kla math Falls netters Saturday on the Tornadoes home court. Coach Bob Huff's netters lost only one singles match In the contest. If the Tornado netters can get by Ashland in their next match Tuesday they will have cinched a tie for first place in the confer ence. They now have a 4-1 record, the only loss being to Grants Pass. In the singles matches. Mod ford's Ken Henry lost to Keith Baxter 3-6, 6-3, and 7-5. John Shaw won his match over Duane Fitzsimmons, 6-1, 6-1, and Dave Hyn turned back Pelican netter Dan Ross 6-3, 7-5. GP 2 Black Tornado tennis play ers of Medford high gained a temporary tie for first spot in Southern Oregon confer ence standings Friday when they whipped Grants Pass 5 to 2 in a match here. The win evened the score for a loss to Grants Pass by the same count a week ago. Medford and the Cavemen each stood 3-1 in the circuit after the tussles. Tornado netters took three of the five singles and both doubles. Singles decisions for the Tornado were Gary Cum- CP Sportsmen Meet Monday Central Point - "Fishing" will be the topic of discussion Monday at the regular month ly meeting of Central Point Sportsmen's club. With the win the Cougars took over undisputed first place In the league. Craig Gardner, Cougar pitcher, went the distance on the hill twirling a two-hitter while striking out 12 Bulldog batters and walking three. Two errors, a single, and a sacrifice fly gave the Cougars three runs in the first stanza. In the fourth two errors, two doubles, by Bob Chapman and Floyd Scaife, a base on balls, and a sacrifice fly gave the Cougars three more counters. Four In Fifth A double by Craig Gardner, a single by Terry Gardner, two errors, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly produced four markers for the Cougars in the fifth panel. The Cougars tallied twice in the sixth frame on two singles, a ground out, and one error. In the seventh, Bulldog pitcher Butch Thompkins reached first on a walk, stole second, went to third base on a ground out, and scored on a fielder's choice. Craig Gardner led Prospect with a single and a double, and Thompkins double was best blow the Bulldogs could produce. Chieftains Trim Foes Rogue River - Rogue River won a three-way track meet at Brookings yesterday by a comfortable margin. The Chieftain had 84's points, Brookings 50 H and Pacific 16. Mu I key Tops Anderson In Decathlon Lawrence, Kan. - (UPD - Phil Mulkey, a tireless competitor from Memphis, Tenn., surged from behind on the basis of 14 ft. 3 in. pole vault Satur day to win the 35th annual Kansas relays decathlon with record 7,167 points. Mulkey was the defending decathlon champion and the victory yesterday was his fourth since 1956. His 7,167 points bettered his own de cathlon record of 6,544, set in 1958, and carried him well above the qualifying standard of 6,750. Steve Anderson, competing unattached out of Portland. Ore., finished second after leading the seven-man field before today's events. His point total of 6.626 also was better than Mulkey's old rec ord. Marvin Wilson, Ottawa. Kan., university athlete who was second after yesterday's events finished with 6,380 points. Mulkey, who was 100 points behind Anderson after Fri day's competition, won four of the ten decathlon trials - two each day.
