Fascko Rolls Perfect Game Toledo, Ohio - OIPD - Any team coming to the American Bowling congress tournament between now and May 22 needing an extra bowler can have a great star with a quick phone call. Louis Fascko, who made history here Thursday with a 300 game in singles play, is sitting in his Lorain, Ohio, home awaiting word from any club who might come up short a bowler. Fascko didn't compete in team play but confined his ABC appearance to singles and would like a chance in the five-man event to fill out his ail-events card. Defying the old unlucky No. 13 tradition, Fascko bowled his perfect game on lanes 13 and 14, getting his final three strikes on No. 13. GAMES CANCELLED Corvallis-IUPD-Rain washed out the Oregon State-Washington State baseball double header Thursday and as a re sult the Northern division games will not be made up. WSU went to Eugene today to meet Oregon. The Cougars also are scheduled to meet the Ducks Saturday. Blank Fired in Portland Holdup Portland (UPD A young bandit fired a blank cartridge at a service station operator in one of two robberies here early today. James N. Manning, 20, sta tion attendant, told officers a young robber pointed a re volver at him and ordered him to open the cash drawer. He said the bandit took the contents, about $100, and then told Manning to open the other drawers. When Manning said he didn't have a key, the robber became angry and fired the blank at Manning's stomach from a distance of eight inches. He left after telling the at tendant, "I've got a buddy across the street watching you." A man of similar descrip tion held up another service station of $18 a few minutes earlier. The bandit fled when a customer drove up. With the kind of weather we're having right now, only a dried-in-the-wool fisherman will be found braving the elements. It is to be hoped that we don't lose too many of these hardy souls with their do-or-die attitude toward opening day of the trout season. Theirs is a spirit which is similar to the spirit of those who settled the West. And when it comes right down to it, a lot of them prob ably are descended from those who settled the West. TRY IT LIGHT If you're- tired of catching fish just to eat and would like to make it more excit ing, throw away that six and eight pound line. Try three or four pound line, and if you want to make it a real thrill, put on two pound line. This last is ad vised only if you have a rod light enough to give when a fish strikes, otherwise you will be limited io tales of how many fish broke your line and got away. If you're skeptical as io the strength of line this light, perhaps you might try a very con vincing test. Tie a piece of four pound line to the end of your rod and then tie the other end to something solid. Hold the rod as you would when fish ind and gradually increase the pressure until the line breaks. Washington - About one third of the nation's solid fuel is from some form of lignite. Jackson County Wanis More Time In Reorganization Salem -TPP- Most of Ore gon's counties are having dif ficulty in working out final plans for school district re organization. A flood of last-minute re quests for extensions of six months in submitting final plans arrived here this morn ing. The State Board of Edu cation was to consider the re quests when it met this after noon. 26 Requests Originally, only seven counties had asked for con sideration of the extension at today's meeting. A total of 26 counties now want more time. They are: Baker, Clackamas, Clatsop, Columbia, Crook, Deschutes, Douglas, Gilliam, Jackson, Jefferson, Klamath, Lake, Lane. Linn, Malheur, Marion, Multnomah, Polk, Sherman, Tillamook. Umatilla, Union, Wallowa, Washington, Wheel er and Yamhill. More Efficient Units The 1D57 Legislature order ed consolidation of the state's school districts. The idea is to boil the hundreds of them down into more efficient units. Five counties also have sub mitted partial reorganization plans for the board's consid eration today. They are Coos, Lane, Linn, Malheur and Marion. Trucks Involved In Highway Mishap A truck-tractor pulling a cot nf double trailers slid sideways on Highway 99 at the Willow Springs junction hnit 1-25 n.m. Wednesday. hitting a pickup truck oper ated by William victor Kyr man, 47, of Central Point, state police reported. The truck-tractor, which jack-knifed, was operated by Gerald Everett Ward, 35, of Eugene. Both vehicles were extensively damaged, police said. The accident is still being Investigated, according to police. the line is much stronger than you thought. Before you try it though, a word of caution, most trout rods i will break when more than 3'2 pounds is applied at the j tip to bend the rod. 1 FISH WITH FIGHT Many of the fish we catch in our local lakes are less than j 12 inches long and when they j are caught on the end of an outfit normally used on our' lakes, they put up about as much fight as an overheated ! nighterawler. The usual trol-i ling rig consists of six or I eight-pound line, a keel or 1 sinker device, followed by a gang troll (ford fender or doc : shelton), then a leader with a ; hook covered with worms or a leader ending with a flat-1 fish or triple teaser. ' TEN INCH WHOPPER Using a light outfit, and i this means a light rod, a light line, and nothing much more on the end of I the line than a small flat fish, hot rod, or fly, you can have more fund with the fish you catch. That ten incher will almost jerk the rod out of your hands and then make you wish you hadn't been so foolish to let someone talk you into using a cobweb to catch a fish. After you get the fish in the boat, and this will eventual ly happen, you may wonder why you're sweating, your hands shake a little, and you are more tired than you thought possible. All this from a ten-inch fish. This type of fishing will appeal only to those who are interested in more than fish to eat. It's an answer to the increased fishing pres sure on our lakes and streams. This pressure is constantly cutting down on the size of most of the fish to the extent that they pro vide very little sport be yond being hooked. With a lighter outfit the fish has a chance to get away and get bigger and the fisherman has a chance- to do more than just crank the fish in. Try it on opening day and it will be one you long remember. NO COMPLAINT It seems that there was log pond dumped up on Trail creek some time ago and the creek was polluted so badly that wells went bad, stock couldn't use the creek for wa ter, and what few fish there were in the creek were killed There was a complaint filed against the operator of the log pond and it was to come up this week. Now the complaint has been dismissed. WONDER AT ATTITUDE Since the people along the creek have been com plaining of this happening for the past several years, one can't help but wonder at their present attitude. Perhaps they, like so many of our citizens, think the laws can be enforced with out their help. History teaches us that those who do not govern themselves end up by being governed) completely! THE ANGLER'S LOG The cold weather isn't do ing the salmon fishing any good in that the water tem perature is in the 40s and that means the fish are going slow. Since the salmon do not en ter the river until the temper ature of the water is over 50 degrees, the weather should make trout fishermen out of many salmon chasers. All ang- lers are advised to check the paper for information on road conditions. It looks almost as though skis may be the way to get through. THE OPTIMIST'S CORNER One bright spot in the ' overcast is the opinion of , the weatherman regarding : the weather for tomorrow. ' He says it should be a clear , day because there is a high moving in for the first lime in weeks. Although he wouldn't Identify himself at least he's on our side. GOOD LUCKI Drop in for a bit of T.
