I have uTTalvakkZ- seen nunorcaa of such persons-usually wom en with a very irritable and ' constipated bowel-and I have ' yet to find one In whom the frequent washing-out of the bowel, even over the course of many years, seemed to have done any harm either to the large bowel, or to the per son. It is impossible for me to see how enemas could do any harm, especially If the water used contains a round ed tablespoon of table salt to the bag. This makes the fluid non-irrltatlng, like tears In the eyes. Usually, when I can pin the doctor down to tell me why he objects to enemas, he does either one ot two things; he says frequent enemas will make a hypochondriac out of the woman, or he tells me of a case he once heard of In which an enema-tip was drlv. en through the wall of th rectum. But the friend who had been drinking heav ily, was so befuddled, he got hold of a long tip used for giving vaginal douches, and shoved it through the wall of the man's rectum. As I re member, a surgeon quickly sewed up the hole and saved the man's life. Why this rare and most unusual accident should cause any physician to forbid his patients ever to taken an enema is beyond my understanding. Years ago, quite a few peo ple, and most nurses, used to speaK ot nign 'and "low enemas. A nign enema was taken through a long rubber rectal tube. What people did not know was that because of the presenence in the rec tum of two or three valve-like partitions, the tube always curls up Into a ball which re mains low in the rectum. As a result, a "high" enema goes no higher than docs a "low" enemal Thousands of women and some of us physicians have the Idea that, In order to get an enema high up Into the bowel, the patient must take it while lying on the floor or resting on her hands and knees. There Is no sense in this idea. An enema should be taken on the toilet seat. It can then run all the way Into the colon. Hundreds of women have told me that for them an enema did not work. The rea son was that the minute pain came, they let out the water, and as a result, they washed out only the rectum. In order to wash out the whole colon, one hns to stand quite a bit of pain or discomfort every time the bowel contracts on the water. The secret is to run In the whole bagful of water before one begins to let any out. If the bag is hung a couple of feet above the shoulders, the water will run In fast. If the water Is warm, this will help the bowel to relax. Some ultra-sensitive persons say that an enema hurts or burns all the way up the abdomen, and others say It produces nausea or even vomiting. Soap-suds make the enema more irritating and perhaps harder to run In. The soap Is not at all necessary. In the old days nurses used sometimes to put some molass es Into the enema water. Many people feel that they should hold the enema In for a while, but this Isn't at all necessary; actually, it is bet- icr to let the water out as soon as It is all run In. In rare cases, In which person has been badly constipated for two weeks or so, two or three enemas given, one after the other may be necessary In order to get a clean bowel. Mrs. Robert Study was lust telling me about the wonder ful Chicago Maternity Center which has a great record back of it. Last year the doctors delivered babies to 3.025 mothers In their own homes. women made 13.188 visits to the pre-natal clinic; and 1,708 Infants were cared for in the pediatric clinic. A fine thing about a great free malernltv center like this is that Its able doctors usually train many young men to be good ob- siciricians. Doubtless many of our great cities have such clinics. Mr. and Mrs. Martin and their three adorable children live in a three-story apart ment building in a small city. Mr. Martin does not work in an office, a store or a factory, but he is very busy every day and is a kind and indulgent father. Mrs. Martin, a devoted mother, does not sew, dust, cook or attend club meetings. Neither does she work, but she does provide for her children. There are 12 apartments In the 3-story gabled structure in which the Martins live, all one - room suites. Strangely enough, every apartment occupied by a family named Martin, and the surname of each family is Purple. The structure In which these hap py families all live is aptly named "The Martin House. ' The ancestors of these Mar tin families never lived in towns or cities. They were dwellers in wooded areas, and they built their nests in hoi Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M. Watkins real reason, for even in this day of too-many-insecticides, the purple martin is still the best insurance against insect pests. The purple martin Is pretty well distributed over most of the U.S. and in Mexico. The male is blue-black in color; the female a dull black with grayish markings. The birds have no song, but twitter con stantly, as if talking to one another. The tail is slightly forked; the wings are long. Like all swallows, the mar tins are migratory birds, hav ing a rather accurate and regular schedule for depar ture from the northern nesting areas to the upper section of South America. There are many serious students of bird behavior that maintain the purple martin Is slowly but steadily decreasing In num bers. It is regrettable If this is true, as they are among our most valuable birds. Regard Jess of how very important you may think you are, you could rightfully leei it an low trees. Now they have left I honor and a privilege to have the country for the more ex citing life of the city. Today s purple martins prefer to live close to human habitations. If no house is supplied them they build their paper, rag nd grass nests in the gables of houses, or under the over hang of garages or farm build ings. Today's purple martins are practically domesticated birds. The purple martin is the largest member of the swal low family. It is a fast and graceful flier; its relationship to the swallow is evident in its swooping flight and friend ly attitude. About the size of a blackbird, it is considered to be brave and fearless, readily attacking crows or hawks that come too close to its nesting site. This is one reason why the wise farmer or poultry- min encourages these cheer ful birds to nest in their neighborhoods. The early American Indians were known to encourage purple martins to nest near their encampments, whether because of a love for the cheerful, glossy black birds themselves or because the birds consume countless num bers of Insects which un doubtedly caused these early Americans considerable dis comfort. Probably the birds' ceaseless war on flying Insects was the the Martin family and their adorable children live in your neighborhood. They are Just awfully nice folks. J. Gutjahr's monthly report. Air freiuht. exDress and passenger traffic totals were all below the totals registered during the same month last year. Some 15,993 pounds of freight were handled during March compared to 33.642 a years ago; 2-281 pounds of ex press compared to 4,260; and 4,728 passengers compared to 6.052. Of the total number of planes landing and taking off last month, 872 of them were air carriers. 1.938 were civil planes and 43 were Air Force planes.
