It is a ter menrlous Job Just to keep reading enough of the enor mous literature of advancing medicine so that I can keep up-to-date for the writing of Candidates Night Set at Grange Hall A "candidates night" will be sponsored by Upper Apple- gate Grange Friday, April 22, at 8 p.m. at the Grange hall, according to Gail Buffington Grange master, and Mrs. Anna Scott, legislative chair man. As I have said, it distresses me not to be able always to answer letters that come from you good readers, but even with several able women help ing me, I cannot do it. Before I could give an answer of any value to hundreds of the peo ple who write me I would have to have immensely more information than the person has been able to send me. Usually, I would have to talk to the peii,un for an hour and then have him well examined. To give just one illustration: here comes to my desk a let ter from a man who asks me if he should have his ruptures operated on, and will he get a good result? How can I an swer? I don't know how old he is; or in what physical and mental condition, or how well he is getting along with a truss, or how physically stren uous his job is, or how big his ruptures are, or If they have been operated on before, or if he is in fit shape to stand an anesthetic, and so on and so on. i Another letter is from a woman who says she has "fe male trouble; " another has "catarrh," and another has a backache. How can 1 guess what is wrong with them? I just must not try. What Is Gastroscopy? Some people have asked If they should have their stom ach looked Into with a long electrically lighted tube call ed a gastroscope. I rarely ask a patient to submit to such an examination, and then I do it because, after careful exami nation of the stomach with x-rays, there still is a question as to just what was seen. Was it an ordinary ulcer that might heal with diet, or was it a beginning cancer? Sometimes an expert gastroscopist can tell, and sometimes even he cannot be sure. Then the pa tient has to be operated on to make sure.
